My Husband Found My Stepdaughter Scrubbing Our Floors While I Watched in Silence — Part 2 of 3

The Web of Lies Unravels

Helena’s flawless facade began to crack, though she quickly tried to regain her composure. She let out a nervous, high-pitched laugh and reached for Christopher’s arm, but he coldly pulled away, his shoulder turning just enough to make her fingers brush empty air. The warmth that usually filled his eyes when he looked at his wife had vanished, replaced by a fierce, protective rage that made him seem like a stranger to her. She had seen him angry before, but never like this—never with this kind of cold, calculated fury.

"Darling, don't be so dramatic," Helena pleaded, her voice trembling slightly as she tried to sound light and dismissive. "Mia was just helping out. The staff is off today, and she wanted to show some appreciation for everything we do for her. It was entirely her idea, I promise." She gestured vaguely at the bucket and rag, as if that would somehow make the scene more acceptable. But her words felt hollow, even to her own ears, and she could see the skepticism in Christopher's eyes.

Christopher looked down at his daughter. Mia’s shoulders shook as she sat on the cold marble, her eyes fixed on the floor, terrified to speak. He could see the red marks on her knees, the raw skin of her hands, the way she flinched when Helena's voice rose. He had spent years protecting this girl, holding her hand through her mother's illness, walking her down the aisle of her first school play, teaching her to ride a bike. And now, in his own home, she had been reduced to this—a servant in her own father's house.

Christopher knelt beside her, ignoring the dirt and water ruinous to his expensive suit. The fabric soaked up the soapy water, but he didn't care. He gently took the scrubbing brush from her hand and threw it across the room, where it clattered loudly against the baseboard. The sound echoed in the foyer, and Mia flinched, but Christopher's voice was soft as he spoke to her, his hand reaching out to cup her chin.

"Mia, look at me," Christopher whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "Tell me the truth. Right now. Whatever it is, I can handle it. You don't have to be afraid." His eyes searched hers, desperate for an answer, for some explanation that would make sense of this nightmare. Mia looked from her father to Helena, who was flashing her a subtle, threatening glare that promised retribution if she spoke. But seeing her father’s unconditional love gave Mia the strength she had lost weeks ago.

She stood up, wiping her tears with her wet apron. Her hands were shaking, but her voice was steady as she spoke, each word falling like a stone into the silence. "She threatened me, Dad," Mia sobbed. "She said if I didn't work as the house maid and sign over the trust fund Mom left for me, she would make sure your new business merger failed. She said she had the power to ruin you, and that you would hate me for destroying your dream." The words spilled out of her, a dam breaking after weeks of pressure.

Christopher felt a cold wave of shock wash over him. The trust fund left by his late wife was meant to secure Mia's future, a safety net that would ensure she never had to struggle. The thought that Helena had been manipulating his daughter, using his own business as a weapon, made his stomach turn. He turned slowly to face Helena, whose face had drained of all color. The sweet, loving woman he thought he had married was gone, replaced by a calculating predator who had tortured his only child just to satisfy her greed.

Helena took a step back, her hand flying to her chest as if she had been physically struck. "Christopher, that's absurd," she stammered, her voice losing its honeyed tone. "She's lying. She's just a jealous girl who doesn't want to share you with me. You can't believe her over me, your wife." But her words were too quick, too defensive, and she avoided his gaze, looking instead at the floor that Mia had been scrubbing moments ago.

Christopher didn't respond. He just stared at her, his eyes cold and unblinking, as if he was seeing her for the first time. He thought of all the times he had come home to find Helena alone, all the times she had complained about Mia's attitude, all the subtle ways she had tried to drive a wedge between them. He had been so blind, so eager to believe in a second chance at love that he had ignored the warning signs. The silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating.
