The Secret Father Who Saved His Pregnant Daughter From a Cruel Husband — Part 2 of 3

The Protector’s Identity

Nicholas stared at the folder, his arrogant facade completely crumbling. He knew when he was beaten. Without another word, he snatched the documents, turned on his heel, and retreated into the mansion, slamming the heavy double doors behind him. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the wind rustling through the trees and the distant chirp of a bird. Claire slowly stood up, brushing the dirt from her teal dress, her legs wobbling beneath her.

She looked at Raymond, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was finally safe, but the mystery of her savior weighed heavily on her mind. “Why did you do this?” Claire whispered, her voice trembling. “Why would a man like you risk everything to save me?” Raymond turned to her, his eyes soft and glistening with unshed tears. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, faded silver locket, its surface worn smooth from years of handling. Claire gasped; she wore an identical locket around her neck, the only keepsake her mother had left her.

“Because I have spent twenty-five years searching for you, Claire,” Raymond said softly, his voice cracking. He opened the locket to reveal a picture of a young woman with the same chestnut hair and gentle eyes as Claire. “Your mother’s family hid you from me when I was young and penniless. They thought I wasn’t good enough for her, and after she passed, they took you away before I could even hold you. By the time I had the resources to fight them, you had vanished, and I lost all trace of you.”

Claire’s breath caught in her throat as she stared at the photograph. “That’s… that’s my mother,” she managed to say, her fingers trembling as she reached out to touch the locket. Raymond nodded, his chin quivering. “I never stopped looking, Claire. I hired private investigators, I scoured records, I even traveled across the country following false leads. And then, six months ago, I found you—married to that monster, trapped in a life that was slowly killing you. I swore I would never stop looking, and I swore I would protect you the moment I found you.”

Claire’s legs gave way, and she sank to the ground, tears streaming down her face. “I thought I was alone,” she sobbed. “I thought he was all I had left.” Raymond knelt beside her, pulling her into a gentle embrace. “You’re not alone anymore, sweetheart. You never were. I know I can’t undo the past, but I can give you a future—a real one, with me, and with your baby. You’ll never have to face another day by yourself.”

They stayed there for a long moment, the world around them fading into a blur of colors and sounds. Claire felt a warmth spread through her chest, a feeling she hadn’t experienced since her mother used to sing her to sleep. She pulled back, wiping her eyes, and looked at Raymond with a new sense of wonder. “Why didn’t you come sooner?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Raymond’s face contorted with pain. “I didn’t know where you were, and I was afraid that if I approached too quickly, I might scare you away. I wanted to be sure, to have everything in place so I could protect you properly.”

He helped her to her feet, steadying her with a firm hand on her elbow. “But I’m here now, and I’m not going anywhere. We have a lot to catch up on, and I have so much to tell you about your mother—about the woman she was, and how much she loved you.” Claire nodded, a fragile smile breaking through her tears. For the first time in years, she felt a glimmer of hope for the future. She placed a hand on her belly, feeling the baby kick softly, and whispered, “I’m not alone anymore.”

Raymond smiled, a deep, genuine smile that reached his eyes. “No, you’re not. And you never will be again.” He gestured toward the SUV. “Come on, let’s get you out of here. I have a place where you can rest, and we can talk about everything—about your mother, about the life I want to give you. But first, I need to know: are you ready to start over?” Claire looked back at the mansion, at the cold glass walls that had held her prisoner for so long, and then at the man who had appeared like a guardian angel. “Yes,” she said, her voice steady. “I’m ready.”
