She Asked Me to Build a Ramp for Her Mom — Then I Saw the Door at the End of the Hall — Part 2 of 3
By WixForum KitchenPublished

Marcus knelt beside the old woman, his heart pounding. "Ma'am, are you okay?"
The woman grabbed his arm with surprising strength, her nails digging into his skin. "She said she'd let me out when I learned to walk again. But I can't." Her voice cracked. "I've been in this room for years."
Marcus looked at Dana, who stood trembling in the doorway. "Years?"
"Don't listen to her," Dana said, her voice rising. "She's confused. She has dementia."
"I'm not confused!" the old woman shouted, her eyes blazing. "I'm her mother, and she's been keeping me prisoner!"
Marcus stood up slowly, his mind racing. "Dana, what is she talking about?"
Dana backed away, her hands shaking. "It's not what it looks like. She fell, and she couldn't get up, and I couldn't take care of her, so I…"
"So you locked her in a room?" Marcus's voice was sharp, incredulous.
"I didn't lock her!" Dana cried. "The door just… sticks sometimes."
The old woman laughed, a bitter, hollow sound. "Ask her why she stopped paying for my physical therapy. Ask her what she did with my pension money."
Marcus turned to Dana, his eyes narrowing. "Is that true?"
Dana's face crumpled. "I needed the money. The bills, the mortgage, the medication… I couldn't afford it all. I thought if I just… if I could keep her here, I could save enough to get her help later."
"Later?" Marcus repeated. "It's been years!"
"I know," Dana whispered, tears streaming down her face. "I know. I'm a terrible daughter. I've ruined everything."
The old woman let go of Marcus's arm and sank back into her pillows. "You were always my stubborn girl," she said, her voice softening. "But you never asked for help. You just tried to fix everything alone."
Marcus looked between them, the weight of the situation pressing down on him. "Dana, you need to call a doctor. She needs real care."
"I can't," Dana said. "If anyone finds out what I did, they'll take her away. They'll put me in jail."
"Maybe that's where you belong," Marcus said, but his voice was tired, not cruel.
Dana sank to her knees, sobbing. "I just wanted to keep her safe. I didn't know what else to do."
The old woman reached out a trembling hand. "Come here, baby."
Dana crawled to her mother's bedside, her shoulders shaking. "I'm so sorry, Mom. I'm so sorry."
The old woman stroked her daughter's hair. "I know, sweetheart. I know. But we can't live like this anymore."
Marcus stood there, feeling like an intruder. He pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over the keypad. He could call social services, the police, someone. But something held him back.
"What are you going to do?" Dana asked, looking up at him with red-rimmed eyes.
Marcus looked at the old woman, then at Dana, and made a decision. "I'm going to build that ramp," he said. "And then we're going to figure out the rest."
"You're not going to call anyone?" Dana asked, disbelief flickering across her face.
"Not yet," Marcus said. "But if I find out you've been lying to me again, I will. Understood?"
Dana nodded, wiping her eyes. "Understood."
Marcus left the room, his mind churning. He had a job to do, but now it felt like so much more. He was building more than a ramp; he was building a bridge back to the world for a woman who'd been hidden from it for too long.
