She Called My Daughter Hers in a Post — My Reply Broke Her Silence Forever — Part 2 of 3

The Document That Changed Everything

I found Maya sitting on the curb outside the salon, her back to the wall, phone clutched in her hands. Her shoulders were shaking, and I knew she was crying, even though she'd never admit it.

"I didn't know," I said, sitting down next to her. "I thought if I kept you away from her, it wouldn't matter."

"But it does matter," Maya said, not looking at me. "She posted that picture like she had a right to me. Like she was my mother."

"She's not your mother."

"Then why does the world think she is?"

I took a deep breath. The truth was ugly, and I'd been carrying it for years. "Your father and I didn't just get divorced, Maya. We had a custody battle. A nasty one. He wanted you, and I fought him with everything I had. I won, but he never forgave me."

Maya finally looked at me, her eyes red. "You never told me."

"I didn't want you to hate him. He's your father."

"And his new wife?"

"She's been trying to replace me from day one," I said. "She sends me letters. Emails. She's told me that you'd be better off with her, that she could give you the mother you deserve."

"That's insane."

"It's more than insane, Maya. It's dangerous." I pulled out my phone and opened my email. "She's been documenting everything. Every time she sees you, even in passing, she posts about it. She's built a whole online persona as your mother. And she's been trying to get your father to sue for custody again."

Maya stared at the screen. "Why?"

"Because she can't have children of her own. And she's decided you're hers."

The weight of the words hung between us. Maya scrolled through the emails, her face going pale. "She's been planning this," she whispered. "For years."

"Yes."

"And you let her?"

"I was trying to protect you."

"By hiding it?" Maya stood up, pacing. "You let her build this whole fantasy, and you didn't tell me. You let her post that picture, and you didn't say a word. How is that protecting me?"

"Because I knew if I fought her publicly, it would get ugly," I said. "And I didn't want you caught in the middle."

"I'm already caught in the middle!" Maya shouted. "I'm the one she's claiming. I'm the one who has to see this. And you just sit there, sipping your water, saying 'it's nails'!"

"I was wrong," I said, my voice breaking. "I was so wrong."

Maya stopped, her chest heaving. "What do we do now?"

"We fight," I said, standing up. "We go to court, we file a restraining order, we do whatever it takes. She is not going to take my daughter."

"But Dad—"

"Your father made his choice," I said. "And it's time you knew the whole truth."

I opened a folder in my phone, the one I'd been keeping secret for years. There were letters, emails, even a draft of a petition she'd written, asking for custody. And at the bottom, a photo of her and your father at a family gathering, with a caption that made my blood run cold: Soon, she'll be mine.

"She's not just posting online," I said. "She's been planning to take you from me. Legally."

Maya grabbed the phone, her hands trembling. "She can't do that."

"She thinks she can. And I've been too scared to stop her."

"We're stopping her now," Maya said, her voice hard. "We're going to the police."

I nodded, but a part of me was terrified. Because I knew what would happen next. The fight wasn't just about a post anymore. It was about everything.
