The keys hit the table like a verdict.

Maya stood in the doorway of their cluttered living room, arms crossed so tight her knuckles went white. The warm glow of the lamp did nothing to soften the ice in her voice.

"You booked this before asking me?" she said, each word sharp as a blade. Leo didn't look up. He was still shrugging off his jacket, the casual ease of his movements making her blood boil.

"It's during my week," she added, stepping forward. The calendar on the fridge was marked in red pen—Maya's days with their son, Jake. This weekend was circled twice.

Leo finally turned. He rubbed his temple like she was giving him a migraine. "That means I don't get a say?"

"You're not paying for it," Maya snapped. "You're not the one taking him."

"Money isn't the only reason parents talk," Leo shot back, his voice rising to match hers.

Maya felt her throat tighten. "I told you I wanted to take him somewhere."

"You told me after you picked the dates," Leo said, throwing his hands up in exasperation. "What was I supposed to do? Read your mind?"

"Every plan turns into three days of arguing with you," Maya said, her voice cracking despite her best effort. She hated that he could still do this to her—make her feel like the unreasonable one.

Leo's voice dropped, suddenly weary. "Then argue with me before you book it."

The air hung heavy between them. On the floor, a small toy truck lay forgotten, a reminder of the little boy who should have been the center of their conversations, not this endless tug-of-war.

Maya stared at Leo, searching his face for any sign of the man she'd once loved. All she saw was exhaustion—and something else. Something she couldn't quite name.

"Where are you even taking him?" she asked, her voice quiet now.

Leo hesitated. Just a fraction of a second. "The lake house. Upstate."

Maya's stomach dropped. That was where she'd planned to take Jake. The exact same weekend.

"You knew," she whispered. "You knew that's where I wanted to go."

Leo shook his head. "I didn't know. It's a coincidence."

But the way he wouldn't meet her eyes told her otherwise.

Maya grabbed her coat from the hook by the door. "This isn't over, Leo."

She walked out into the cold night, her mind racing. Something about this didn't add up. Leo had never fought this hard for a weekend before. He barely remembered Jake's school play last month.

Now he was suddenly booking trips and playing the devoted father? Maya didn't believe it.

And she was going to find out why.
