A Soldier Returns Home to Save His Pregnant Wife From His Abusive Mother — Part 2 of 3

By WixForum KitchenPublished

The Mask of a Mother Crumbles to Dust

Megan's sobs slowly quieted into shuddering breaths, her fingers clutching the fabric of Tyler's uniform as if he might disappear. He rocked her gently, his jaw clenched so tight it ached. The kitchen smelled of stale grease and fear, and the clutter on the counters seemed to close in on them like a cage.

Frances straightened herself, brushing a strand of hair from her face with trembling fingers. She forced a smile, but it was a grotesque parody of warmth. "Tyler, thank God you're home early," she said, her voice syrupy and strained. "She's been hysterical all day. I was just trying to calm her down. You know how emotional pregnant women can be."

Tyler slowly rose to his feet, keeping one hand on Megan's shoulder. He turned to face his mother, and the look in his eyes made her take a step back. "You did that to her," he said, his voice low and dangerous, pointing at the bruise on Megan's cheek. "My wife. Pregnant with my child. You put your hands on her."

Frances scoffed, waving a dismissive hand. "She fell, Tyler. She's clumsy, always tripping over her own feet. I tried to catch her, but—"

"Liar!" Megan's voice cut through the air, raw and fierce. She pushed herself up from the floor, her legs unsteady, but her eyes blazing with a fire Tyler had never seen before. "She's been lying to you for months, Tyler. Every time you called, she stood over me, her fingers digging into my arm, making sure I said nothing. She threatened to tell you I was cheating on you while you were deployed if I ever complained."

Tyler's blood ran cold. He looked at Megan, then back at his mother. Frances's face had gone white, her lips pressed into a thin line. "That's absurd," Frances said, her voice rising. "She's delusional. The pregnancy has addled her brain."

"She made me clean the house on my hands and knees," Megan continued, her voice shaking but growing stronger with each word. "She locked me in the bathroom for hours when I was sick. She told me I was worthless, that you would never love me, that I was just a broodmare for her grandchild. She said once the baby came, she'd find a way to get rid of me."

Tyler's hands clenched into fists at his sides. The memories of his mother's phone calls flooded back—her constant questions about Megan, her subtle digs and insinuations. He had dismissed them as motherly concern. Now, he saw them for what they were: weapons.

"Is this true?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper, though he already knew the answer. He looked at Frances, searching her face for some sign of the woman who had kissed his scraped knees and baked him birthday cakes. But all he saw was a stranger, her eyes cold and calculating.

Frances laughed, a brittle, hollow sound. "She's trying to turn you against me, Tyler. Can't you see that? I've sacrificed everything for you. I gave up my career, my life, to raise you. And this—this stranger—wants to steal you away."

"She's my wife," Tyler said, his voice rising. "She's carrying my child. And you—" He stopped, the word catching in his throat. "You've been torturing her. In my own home."

Megan stepped closer to Tyler, her hand finding his. He squeezed it, feeling the warmth of her fingers, the fragility of her bones. "She wanted to destroy us," Megan said softly. "She wanted you all to herself."

Frances's mask finally crumbled. Her face contorted with rage, her eyes wild. "You ungrateful little—" she started, lunging toward Megan, but Tyler stepped between them, his body a shield.

"Enough!" he shouted, his voice echoing off the kitchen walls. "You will never touch her again." He pulled out his phone, his thumb trembling as he dialed. Frances's eyes widened with realization, her mouth opening and closing like a fish gasping for air.

"What are you doing?" she demanded, her voice cracking. "I'm your mother!"

"And she's my wife," Tyler said, his voice steady now, cold as steel. "You chose this. Not me." He pressed the phone to his ear and spoke the words that would shatter his family forever. "Yes, I need to report an assault."
