The Babysitter Pointed at Our Dog, Then the Collar Cam Played Back the Truth — Part 3 of 3

The Twist That Left Us All Breathless
I didn't sleep that night. Every creak of the house made me jump, every shadow seemed to move. Titan stayed by Noah's crib, his head resting on the rail, his eyes open and watchful. I sat in the hallway, my phone in my hand, ready to dial 911 at the slightest sound.
At dawn, I got a call from Detective Morales. “Elena, we found something. Patricia—the woman who came to your house—she's not Carla's sister. She's her mother.”
I sat up straight. “What?”
“The family dynamics are more complicated than we thought. Carla was protecting her mother. Patricia was the one who hurt the children. Carla took the blame each time, but Patricia was the mastermind. She's been manipulating Carla her entire life.”
My mind raced. “So Carla is a victim too?”
“In a way. But that doesn't excuse what she did to Noah. She was willing to let him fall to protect her mother's secret.”
I thought about Carla's trembling finger, her gasping lie. There had been fear in her eyes—not just panic, but something deeper. She was terrified of her mother.
“What happens now?” I asked.
“We've issued a warrant for Patricia's arrest. She's been linked to three incidents across state lines. We believe she's been using Carla as a pawn to get into homes with valuable items—she's been stealing from the families too.”
I remembered the missing silver locket from my jewelry box. I had blamed myself for losing it. “She stole from us.”
“We'll do our best to recover the items. But Elena, I need to ask you something. Do you have any security footage of Patricia from yesterday?”
“My neighbor has a camera on her porch. It might have caught her.”
I forwarded the footage to the detective. Within hours, Patricia was arrested at a motel on the edge of town. The news spread quickly. Sarah Whitmore called me, her voice thick with emotion. “You did it. You finally got them.”
“We did it,” I said. “Titan did it.”
Sarah laughed softly. “Dogs are better than people sometimes. They never lie.”
I looked at Titan, sprawled on the living room floor, Noah asleep on his back. The sun streamed through the windows, turning the dust motes into gold. For the first time in days, I felt a flicker of peace.
But the drama wasn't over. As Patricia was being processed, she made a chilling request: she wanted to speak with me. Alone.
I agreed, against the advice of the detective. We sat across from each other in the same interview room where I had learned the truth about Carla. Patricia's hands were cuffed to the table, but her eyes were sharp and unrepentant.
“You have no idea what you've done,” she said. “Carla was my daughter, yes. But she was also my accomplice. And you've taken her away from me.”
“She's not a child anymore. She's a grown woman who made her own choices.”
Patricia leaned forward. “You think you're so smart. But you don't know the real reason I targeted your family. It wasn't just the money. It was the dog.”
I froze. “What?”
“Your Great Pyrenees. Titan. He belonged to my sister, years ago. She died in a car accident, and her husband gave the dog away. I wanted him back. I wanted to hurt the family that took him.”
The room spun. I gripped the edge of the table. “You've been trying to take Titan?”
“I was going to make you get rid of him. Then I'd adopt him. But you're too attached, aren't you?”
A cold fury rose in my chest. “You tried to kill my son to steal my dog?”
Patricia smiled. “I didn't try to kill him. I just wanted to scare you. Carla went too far. She always does.”
I stood up, my hands shaking. “You're a monster.”
“Maybe. But I'm also going to tell you something you don't know. Titan isn't just a dog. He's a trained protection animal. I trained him myself. He was never meant to be a pet. He was meant to be a weapon.”
I stared at her, the words not making sense. “Titan saved Noah. He protected him.”
“Because I trained him to protect family. But he's not yours. He's mine. And I'll get him back.”
I left the station in a daze. When I got home, Titan met me at the door, his tail wagging, his eyes full of love. I knelt and buried my face in his fur.
“You're not a weapon,” I whispered. “You're my hero.”
He licked my cheek, and I knew—whatever Patricia planned, I would fight for him. I would fight for Noah. And I would win.
