Blind Billionaire Catches Greedy Sister-in-Law Stealing His Fortune — Part 2 of 3

The Hidden Ledger Behind the Bookshelf
The police had barely left with Tiffany when Arthur closed the library doors and turned to Sophie, his expression softening. "You were very brave," he said, kneeling to her level. "Do you know why I pretended to be blind?"
Sophie sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her hand. "To catch Aunt Tiffany?"
"Partly," Arthur admitted. "But there's more. Your father—my brother—he came to me three months before he died. He told me he suspected someone was embezzling from the family trust. He didn't know who, but he had a clue."
Arthur rose and walked to the bookshelf, his fingers trailing along the spines of old leather volumes. With a practiced motion, he pressed a hidden latch, and the bookshelf swung open to reveal a second, smaller vault.
Sophie's eyes widened. "Another safe?"
"Your father was clever," Arthur said, pulling out a worn leather ledger. "He kept two sets of books. The one everyone knew about—and this one." He opened it, revealing pages of meticulous handwriting. "This ledger tracks every transaction of the Sterling Shipping Company for the past twenty years. And it shows exactly who's been skimming money."
Sophie stepped closer, her small fingers tracing the columns of numbers. "Aunt Tiffany?"
"Not just her," Arthur said heavily. "Your father's death? It wasn't an accident. The car crash that took your parents—someone tampered with the brakes."
Sophie gasped, her face going white. "No..."
"I've been investigating for months," Arthur continued, his voice tight with controlled anger. "Tiffany was the one who hired the mechanic. She thought she could get away with it. She thought if she could get control of the trust, she could drain it completely."
Sophie's tears started anew. "She killed my parents?"
Arthur pulled her into a hug. "I'm so sorry, sweetheart. I didn't want to tell you like this. But I needed to catch her in the act—to have proof that would hold up in court. That's why I pretended to be blind. I needed her to think she could act without consequences."
"But the camera..." Sophie said, looking up at him.
"It recorded everything," Arthur said. "Her confession about the money, her threatening you. Combined with the ledger and the mechanic's testimony, she'll never see the light of day again."
Sophie was silent for a long moment. Then she asked, quietly, "What about the company, Uncle Arthur? What happens now?"
Arthur smiled, a genuine warmth replacing the coldness in his eyes. "Your father left everything to you, Sophie. I'm just the guardian until you're ready. And I promise you, I'll teach you everything I know. The Sterling legacy will live on—through you."
Sophie hugged him tightly, her small body shaking with a mix of grief and relief. "Thank you, Uncle Arthur."
"Don't thank me yet," Arthur said, his tone turning serious. "There's one more thing. The police are going to want to question you about what happened tonight. And there's the matter of the family lawyer—he'll need to update the trust documents."
Sophie nodded, wiping her eyes. "I can do that."
"I know you can," Arthur said. "You're a Sterling through and through."
He locked the ledger back in the hidden vault and closed the bookshelf. Then he called for his butler, a stoic man named James, to bring Sophie a glass of warm milk.
As Sophie sipped her milk in the kitchen, Arthur stood by the window, looking out at the misty blue lake. The night was quiet now, but he knew the storm wasn't over. Tiffany's arrest was just the first crack in a much larger conspiracy.
He pulled out his phone and dialed a number. "Detective Miller? It's Arthur Sterling. I have more information about the tampering case. And I think you'll want to hear what else I've found."
The detective listened, then said, "We're on it, Mr. Sterling. We'll need you to come down to the station tomorrow to give a full statement."
"I'll be there," Arthur said. "But first, I need to make sure my niece is safe."
He ended the call and looked back at Sophie, who was now curled up on a leather armchair, exhausted. Her breathing was slow and even, her face peaceful in sleep.
Arthur's jaw tightened. He had spent three years playing the role of a helpless old man, enduring Tiffany's sneers and condescension. But it had been worth it—if it meant bringing his brother's killer to justice.
He sat down in the armchair across from Sophie, keeping watch. Tomorrow, the real battle would begin. But tonight, he would let her rest.
He didn't sleep. He just watched over her, thinking about the future and the secrets still buried in the ledgers.
