The Coma Was a Trap: He Caught His Stepmother Red-Handed — Part 2 of 3

The Bronze Strongbox's Secret
After the police took Miranda away, the rotunda fell silent. Leo's sobs quieted to sniffles, and I knelt down to his level, cupping his face in my hands. "You were so brave," I said. "But it's not over yet."
He looked at me, confused. "What do you mean, Dad?"
I stood and walked to the pedestal where the antique bronze strongbox sat. It was a relic from my grandfather's time, with a combination lock that had been set for decades. My father had told me the combination on his deathbed, and I had never shared it with anyone—not even Miranda.
I spun the dial slowly, feeling the familiar clicks. Leo came to stand beside me, his small hand on my arm. "What's inside?"
"The final piece," I said. The lock gave way with a satisfying thunk, and I lifted the lid.
Inside lay a single envelope, yellowed with age. My name was scrawled across the front in my father's handwriting. I picked it up, my fingers trembling slightly. The paper crackled as I opened it.
It was a letter—and a second deed. This one was for a property that had been in the Cross family for over a century: a plot of land on the edge of the city, now worth millions. But the letter explained something far more important.
"Dad?" Leo's voice broke the silence. "What does it say?"
I read the letter twice, my mind spinning. Then I looked at my son, and I smiled. "Your grandmother left this to me," I said. "But it was never meant to be mine. It was meant for you."
Leo's eyes went wide. "Me?"
"On your eighteenth birthday," I said. "But that's not the best part." I handed him the letter. "Read the last paragraph."
He struggled with the cursive, but he managed to sound out the words. "If Miranda Cross attempts to claim any part of this estate… she will be found to have forfeited all rights… and the full ownership will pass to the direct descendant."
I watched his face as the meaning sunk in. "She didn't just try to steal the deed," I said. "She tried to steal your inheritance. And by doing so, she gave it to you—cleanly, legally, and irrevocably."
Leo looked up at me, tears still fresh on his cheeks. "So she gets nothing?"
"Not even the loot she thought she had," I said. "And when her lawyer reads this letter, she'll know it too."
But I wasn't done. I pulled out my phone and called my lawyer. "I need you to draw up papers," I said. "The strongest trust agreement you can write. I want it airtight, with every clause in favor of my son."
The lawyer was silent for a moment. "Julian, are you sure? This will cut off any claim Miranda might make—through you or anyone else."
"I've never been more sure of anything." I ended the call and turned back to Leo. "You're going to be the richest kid at your school," I said. "But more importantly, you're going to be the one who saved this family."
He hugged me, burying his face in my chest. I held him tight, breathing in the scent of his school blazer, the faint smell of tears and childhood. And I knew that the battle was far from over.
Miranda would not go quietly. She was a woman who had spent years positioning herself for this fortune, and she would fight with every dirty trick she knew. But I had the letter. I had the deed. And I had the truth.
As the sun dipped lower through the skylight, casting long shadows across the marble floor, I made a promise to my son. "No matter what happens next," I said, "we face it together."
He nodded, his small hand slipping into mine. And in that moment, I knew that whatever Miranda threw at us, we would be ready.
But I hadn't yet realized how far she would go to destroy us.
