The Dirty Little Girl Who Shamed a Posh Bakery — Then the Owner Saw What She Was Hiding — Part 2 of 3
By WixForum KitchenPublished

The Woman Who Smiled Like a Trap
The woman who spoke was sleek and polished, with sharp cheekbones and a designer coat that probably cost more than Lily's entire life. She walked toward them with a confident stride, a leather briefcase clutched in her manicured hand. Her name was Patricia Beaumont, the owner's wife — or so she claimed.
"I'm sorry, darling," she said to Mr. Beaumont, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "But you're being played. These little urchins are con artists. They stole that locket from my jewelry box last week."
Lily's heart pounded. "We didn't steal anything!" she cried. "Tommy found it in the gutter!"
Patricia laughed, a cold, brittle sound. "In the gutter? How convenient. And I suppose you also just happened to lose your mother, and she just happened to be your long-lost daughter?" She turned to Mr. Beaumont, her eyes hardening. "Think about it, darling. This is too perfect. They're playing you."
Mr. Beaumont looked at Lily, then at Tommy, then at the locket in his hand. His face was a storm of confusion and hope. "But the photo," he said. "It's her. It's Emily."
"The photo could have been copied," Patricia said smoothly. "These street kids have connections. They know how to forge things."
Lily felt tears burning in her eyes. "We don't know how to forge anything," she said. "We're just hungry. We just wanted a piece of bread."
Patricia stepped closer, her heels clicking on the marble. "And that's your story? You just happened to walk into the one bakery in the city owned by your long-lost grandfather?" She shook her head. "It's pathetic, really. But I'm not going to let you take advantage of my husband's grief."
Mr. Beaumont held up a hand. "Patricia, please," he said. "Let's not jump to conclusions. We need to verify this."
"I already have," Patricia said, pulling a folder from her briefcase. "I had my lawyer run a background check on these two. Their mother was a drug addict who abandoned them months ago. She's not your daughter. Your daughter died ten years ago in a car accident in France."
Lily's mouth fell open. "That's not true!" she screamed. "Our mother is alive! She just left! She said she was coming back!"
But even as the words left her mouth, doubt crept in. Had their mother really been coming back? Or had she been lying, just like everyone else?
Mr. Beaumont's face crumbled. He looked at the locket, then at Lily, and his eyes filled with a terrible sadness. "I'm sorry," he said, his voice hoarse. "I want to believe you. But I can't just take your word for it."
"Please," Lily begged. "Please, we have nowhere else to go. We're cold, we're hungry. I'll do anything. I'll work for you, I'll clean your floors, I'll wash your dishes. Just please don't send us away."
Patricia smiled, a thin, cruel line. "That's very touching," she said. "But I think it's time for you to leave. Security?"
Two burly men in black suits appeared, their faces impassive. They moved toward Lily and Tommy, and Lily instinctively pulled Tommy behind her, shielding him with her body.
"Don't touch us!" she shouted. "We didn't do anything wrong!"
But the security guards were not moved by her words. One of them grabbed her arm, his grip like iron. Tommy started to cry, a high, keening wail that echoed through the marble hall. Lily struggled, but she was too weak, too hungry, too small.
"Wait!" Mr. Beaumont's voice rang out, sharp and commanding. The guards froze. He walked over to Lily and Tommy, his eyes searching their faces. "There's one way to settle this," he said. "A DNA test. It's the only way to know for sure."
Patricia's smile faltered. "That could take weeks," she said. "And in the meantime, these two will be living on the streets. Is that what you want?"
"No," Mr. Beaumont said, his voice firm. "They'll stay with us. In my house. Under my supervision." He looked at Patricia, and for the first time, Lily saw a flicker of steel in his eyes. "Until the test results come back, they are guests in my home. I will not throw children out into the cold."
Patricia's face turned red. "You can't be serious," she hissed. "You barely know them!"
"I know they're children," Mr. Beaumont said quietly. "And I know what it's like to lose a child. I won't let that happen to anyone else."
Lily felt a sob rise in her throat. She looked up at Mr. Beaumont, at this tall, proud man who was willing to take a chance on her and Tommy. She didn't know if he was truly her grandfather or just a kind stranger, but at that moment, he was the closest thing to a savior she had ever known.
"Thank you," she whispered. "Thank you."
Mr. Beaumont nodded, his eyes glistening. "Come," he said. "Let's get you both something to eat."
He led them away from the counter, past the staring customers, past Patricia's furious glare, and into the back of the bakery, where the ovens were still warm and the smell of fresh bread was even stronger. Lily held Tommy's hand, her heart pounding with a wild, fragile hope.
But as she looked back over her shoulder, she saw Patricia watching them, her phone already in her hand, her fingers typing furiously. And Lily knew, with a cold certainty, that this was far from over.
