Scene from the story “Our Happy Home Shattered When Our Maid Sang a Lullaby My Husband Knew”

The Day a Stranger's Song Brought Our House to a Standstill

The morning started like any other. Sunlight streamed through our kitchen windows, and I was pouring coffee while my husband Mark scrolled through his phone. Our daughter, Sophie, was in her high chair, banging a wooden spoon against the tray.

We had just hired a part-time maid, Lila, a sweet college student from the local university. She was quiet, diligent, and had a gentle way with Sophie. I didn't think much of it when she started humming while she wiped down the counters.

But then she began to sing. Softly, almost to herself, a lullaby I'd never heard. It was in Spanish, with a haunting melody that seemed to wrap around the room.

Mark's coffee cup slipped from his hand and crashed onto the tile. He stood frozen, his face pale as the cream he'd just poured. His eyes were locked on Lila, who hadn't noticed anything wrong.

"Mark?" I asked, my voice trembling. "Are you okay?"

He didn't answer. He just stared at Lila as if he'd seen a ghost. When she finally looked up, she blushed and apologized for startling him.

"Where did you learn that song?" Mark asked, his voice raspy.

"My mother used to sing it to me," Lila said, confused. "It's a lullaby from her hometown in Mexico."

Mark just nodded and walked out of the kitchen. I followed him to our bedroom, but he brushed me off, saying he had a headache. I knew better. Something about that song had triggered a memory he didn't want to share.

That evening, I asked him about it again. He snapped at me, saying it was nothing. But his hands were shaking when he lit a cigarette on the porch.

I tried to let it go. But the next day, I found him in his study, staring at a photo I'd never seen. It was of a young woman holding a baby, and Mark was beside her, smiling with a look of pure joy.

"Who is this?" I asked, my heart pounding.

Mark grabbed the photo from my hand. "An old friend," he said, but his eyes told a different story.

I didn't believe him. And that night, I made a decision that would change everything.
