The Duchess Slapped the Maid at the Auction — Then the Auctioneer Revealed the Portrait Was Hers — Part 2 of 3

The Duchess’s Desperate Gambit
The ballroom felt like a pressure cooker, every eye fixed on the Duchess and me. She stood frozen, her face a mask of disbelief, but I could see the gears turning behind her eyes. Margaret Ashworth was not a woman who surrendered easily.
“I don’t care about some old deed,” she said, her voice sharp as broken glass. “This painting has been in my family for over a century. What you have is a piece of paper, easily forged.”
Mr. Whitfield cleared his throat. “Your Grace, with all due respect, the deed and the inscription are consistent. I’m afraid the evidence is quite compelling.”
“Evidence?” The Duchess laughed, but it was hollow. “You’re taking the word of a maid over mine?”
“I’m taking the word of documented history,” he replied calmly. “And I must inform you that the sale cannot proceed until this matter is resolved.”
“Then resolve it,” she snapped. “I have lawyers who will tear this ridiculous claim apart.”
But I wasn't done. I had kept the biggest secret for last, and now was the moment to unleash it.
“There’s more,” I said, and the room leaned in. “The deed isn’t the only thing I found. There’s a letter, written by your grandfather to my great-grandmother, confessing that he had taken the painting under false pretenses.”
The Duchess swayed, and her lawyer grabbed her arm to steady her. “That’s enough,” the lawyer said, his voice firm. “We will deal with this in court.”
“No,” the Duchess said, her voice suddenly small. “No court.”
Everyone stared at her. She looked like a cornered animal, her pride crumbling by the second.
“Why not?” I asked, though I already knew the answer.
“Because the letter also mentions something else,” I said, pulling a folded piece of paper from my apron pocket. “Something about a child.”
The Duchess’s face went white. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I know that your grandfather wrote about a baby girl, born to my great-grandmother, who was given away to keep the scandal quiet. That baby was my grandmother, and she was adopted by the Vance family—but her real mother was your grandmother.”
The gasps were so loud they drowned out the music from the string quartet. The Duchess looked like she might collapse.
“That’s a lie,” she whispered, but her voice held no conviction.
“It’s all here,” I said, holding up the letter. “In his own handwriting. He talks about how he forced Eleanor to give up the child, how he paid her off with a small sum and took the painting as a reminder of his shame.”
“Shut up!” the Duchess screamed, and for the first time, I saw her composure crack completely. “Shut up, you little wretch!”
She lunged at me, but her lawyer held her back. The crowd watched in horror and fascination as the great Duchess of Ashworth lost her mind.
“Your Grace, please,” her lawyer pleaded, but she was beyond reason.
“I am the Duchess!” she shouted. “I am the only one who matters in this family. That painting is mine, and nothing you say will change that!”
“But it’s not,” I said, my voice quiet but firm. “And you know it. You’ve always known it.”
The room fell silent again, and in that silence, I could hear the sound of her world crumbling.
The Revelation That Changed Everything
Mr. Whitfield stepped forward, his face somber. “Given these circumstances, I must declare the auction void. The painting will be held in trust until legal ownership is determined.”
“No,” the Duchess said, but it was a whisper now. “Please.”
I almost felt sorry for her. Almost.
“There’s one more thing,” I said, and I could feel the weight of my next words. “The letter also mentions a second painting, one that your grandfather kept for himself. It’s hidden in the attic of this estate.”
The Duchess stared at me, her eyes wide. “How do you know that?”
“Because I found it,” I said. “Last week, when I was cleaning. It’s a portrait of a young woman, and on the back, there’s an inscription that matches the one on this painting.”
“Where is it?” she demanded, her voice shaking.
“It’s safe,” I said. “I gave it to someone I trust.”
The Duchess looked like she was going to be sick. “What do you want?” she asked, her voice barely audible. “Money? Revenge?”
“I want the truth,” I said. “And I want you to acknowledge that your family has been living on a lie for generations.”
The crowd murmured, and I saw the pity in their eyes—not for me, but for her. The great Duchess had fallen, and she had fallen hard.
“I can’t,” she said, and for the first time, she looked like a broken old woman. “If I admit that, I lose everything.”
“You’ve already lost it,” I said. “You just didn’t know it until now.”
She stared at me, tears glistening in her eyes, and then she did something that surprised me. She laughed. It was a bitter, broken laugh, and it echoed through the ballroom like a death knell.
“You think you’ve won,” she said, looking at me with a strange mixture of hatred and admiration. “But you have no idea what you’ve started.”
“What do you mean?” I asked, but she just shook her head.
“There are things about this family that are darker than you can imagine,” she said. “And if you dig too deep, you might not like what you find.”
I felt a chill run down my spine, but I didn’t back down. “I’m not afraid of the dark,” I said. “I’ve been living in it my whole life.”
The Duchess looked at me for a long moment, and then she turned and walked away, her heels clicking on the marble floor. The crowd parted to let her pass, and no one said a word.
I watched her go, and I felt a strange mix of triumph and dread. The battle was won, but the war was far from over.
And as I looked at the portrait of my great-grandmother, I knew that the inscription on the back held a secret that would change everything—not just for the Duchess, but for me.
I just didn’t know yet how deeply it would cut.
