The Empty Chair at the Tea Stall: A Friendship Broken by a Secret — Part 2 of 3

By WixForum KitchenPublished

The Confession That Changed Everything

Let me rewind. My name is Jake, and Daniel was my best friend since we were six years old. We grew up in the same neighborhood, went to the same school, and even fell in love with the same girl once (we both backed off, laughing about it for weeks).

We were inseparable. When my dad left, Daniel's family took me in for a month. When Daniel lost his job, I lent him money without a second thought. We had a bond that everyone envied.

But then, about a year ago, something changed. Daniel started acting strange—distant, secretive. He would cancel our plans at the last minute, and when we did meet, he seemed distracted, like his mind was somewhere else.

I asked him about it, but he always brushed it off. "It's nothing, Jake. Just work stress." I believed him. I wanted to believe him.

Then, the inheritance came. My uncle passed away and left me a plot of land on the outskirts of town. It wasn't worth much, but it was sentimental. Daniel knew how much it meant to me.

So when I found out that Daniel had sold that land without my permission—forged my signature, took the money, and never said a word—I felt the ground beneath me give way.

I confronted him that night at the tea stall. I was furious, my voice shaking with rage. "How could you do this to me, Danny? After everything we've been through?"

He didn't deny it. He just sat there, staring at the table, his hands wrapped around his glass. "I did what I had to do," he said, his voice flat.

"That's it?" I screamed, standing up so fast my chair fell over. "That's all you have to say? You stole from me, Danny. You stole from your best friend."

He looked up at me, and for the first time, I saw something in his eyes—not guilt, but pain. A deep, raw pain that I had never seen before.

"Jake, please," he said, reaching out to me. "Let me explain."

"Explain what?" I spat. "That you're a thief? That you're a liar? I never want to see your face again."

I turned to walk away, my heart pounding in my chest. But then, he said something that stopped me dead in my tracks.

"I didn't do it for the money."

I turned back, my anger turning to confusion. "What do you mean?"

He took a shaky breath, tears streaming down his face. "I did it because I'm sick, Jake. I'm dying. And I didn't want you to watch me go through it."

The world stopped. The tea stall, the night, everything faded away. I was only aware of Daniel's face, pale and trembling, as he whispered the words that would change everything.

"I have cancer, Jake. Stage four. The money was for my treatment. I didn't want to burden you with it."

I stood there, frozen, my anger crumbling into something else—something that felt like a punch to the gut. He was sick. He had been sick, and I had been too blind to see it.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I finally managed, my voice barely a whisper.

"Because I knew you would drop everything to help me," he said, his voice breaking. "And I couldn't let you do that. You have your own life, Jake. Your own dreams."

I collapsed back into my chair, my hands shaking. All this time, I thought he had betrayed me. But the truth was so much worse.
