My Father's Humble Heirloom Became A Billion-Dollar Treasure Before My Very Eyes! — Part 2 of 3

The Unveiling of a Dynasty

The air in the boardroom, once thick with Marcus's arrogance, now hung heavy with his palpable fear. Director Vance, his initial shock giving way to professional reverence, carefully cradled the Qianlong Imperial Jade Seal. His gloved hands moved with the practiced grace of a conservator, ensuring the priceless artifact remained pristine. "Mr. Thomas," Vance began, his voice still tinged with awe, "this seal is not merely an object of immense monetary value. It is a symbol of imperial power, a linchpin of Chinese history. Its disappearance two centuries ago caused a significant stir among collectors and historians worldwide. Its rediscovery here, in this manner, is… extraordinary." He paused, his gaze shifting from the seal to Thomas, a flicker of understanding dawning in his eyes. "Your family… you are the descendants of the guardians who were entrusted with its safekeeping?"

Thomas nodded slowly, his gaze never leaving his son’s ashen face. "My family has served the imperial court for generations. We were sworn to protect this seal, to keep it hidden until a time of true need, or until it could be returned to its rightful place. When the dynasty fell, my ancestors went into hiding, taking the seal with them, protecting it from those who would exploit it." He looked at Marcus, a profound sadness in his eyes. "We have lived in obscurity, preserving our heritage, while men like you… you build empires on the backs of others, valuing only what you can immediately profit from." Marcus remained silent, trapped in a self-made prison of his own greed. The twenty dollars he had offered felt like a thousand lifetimes ago, a symbol of his profound ignorance.

The Weight of Greed

Vance carefully placed the seal into a specially designed, climate-controlled case. "The insurance valuation is a conservative estimate, Mr. Thomas. Its historical significance, its rarity… it could fetch far more at auction. Fifty million is merely the insured minimum reserve. A private collector, a museum… the demand would be unprecedented." He looked at Marcus, a hint of disapproval in his professional demeanor. "I must insist that this artifact be handled with the utmost care and respect. It belongs to history, not to the highest bidder looking for a quick profit." Marcus finally stirred, a guttural sound escaping his throat. "This… this can't be happening," he stammered, his voice weak and reedy. "That old fool… he had no idea what he possessed. It was just sitting in his dusty apartment!"

Thomas turned his full attention to his son. "It was not 'just sitting,' Marcus. It was cherished. It was protected. It was a reminder of who we are, of the honor and duty that runs through our bloodline. Something you seem to have forgotten, or perhaps, never truly learned." He stepped closer, his presence filling the space Marcus had once dominated. "You offered me twenty dollars for a treasure that could secure my family's future for generations. You saw only the tarnish, not the brilliance beneath. You saw an old man, not the inheritor of a priceless legacy." The words landed like hammer blows, each one chipping away at Marcus's remaining facade of control. He looked cornered, desperate, the predatory gleam in his eyes replaced by a desperate, calculating glint. He was a broker; he knew how to leverage assets, and he suddenly saw his father, and the seal, as his ultimate, albeit stolen, asset.

A Son's Desperate Gambit

Marcus pushed himself up from the chair, his earlier shock replaced by a frantic energy. "Wait, Father, wait!" he pleaded, his voice cracking. "I… I didn't know. Vance, you said it’s worth millions? Fifty million? More?" He turned to Vance, his eyes wide with a desperate avarice. "This changes everything. We can… we can work something out. You don't have to sell it. We can…" He trailed off, a desperate plan forming in his mind. He saw not history, not heritage, but an opportunity. An opportunity to reclaim his perceived status, to erase his humiliation, and to seize a fortune that he felt was rightfully his, simply by virtue of being Thomas's son. He had always believed he was the one destined for greatness, the one who truly understood the value of money. Now, faced with a tangible, unbelievable fortune, his greed had reached a fever pitch.

Vance, sensing the shift in dynamics, stepped back, his professional boundaries firmly in place. "Mr. Marcus, the artifact belongs to Mr. Thomas. Any discussions regarding its future must be directly with him." He gave a curt nod and, carefully securing the case, excused himself, leaving father and son alone once more in the echoing silence of the boardroom. The storm outside had begun to subside, the thunder a distant rumble, but the tempest between Thomas and Marcus was far from over. Marcus turned to his father, his expression shifting from desperation to a forced, almost theatrical, earnestness. "Father, think about this. We are family. This seal… it could solve all our problems. We could be set for life! Forget that paltry twenty dollars. I'll… I'll give you whatever you want. Just let me help you manage this. Let me protect it for you. You don't need the stress, the complications. I can handle it." His words were a smooth, practiced manipulation, the same tactics he used to fleece investors, now aimed directly at his own father.
