The Day the Greedy Fiancé Thought I Was Deaf — Until I Caught His Wrist in Mid-Air — Part 2 of 3

What the Safe Was Hiding

Two days after Kyle's arrest, the manor felt lighter, but Walter knew better than to relax. The vault in the library had been his sanctuary for forty years, and it held more than just stock certificates. It held secrets that could topple businesses, ruin reputations, and break hearts.

Mateo sat on the leather couch in the study, a bowl of chocolate ice cream melting in his hands, his eyes still red-rimmed but calm. "Grandpa, what's going to happen to Kyle?"

Walter set down his coffee and sat beside him. "He's going to prison for a long time, son. The police found enough evidence in his apartment to bury him for fraud, theft, and attempted embezzlement."

"Good," Mateo said fiercely, but then his voice softened. "But I'm scared. He said he had a partner. Someone who helped him plan everything."

Walter's eyes narrowed. A partner. He'd suspected as much. Kyle was too smooth, too confident, to have acted alone. Someone was pulling strings from the shadows, and that someone was about to discover that the old man they'd written off was very much awake.

That evening, Walter received a call from his lawyer, Margaret Chen, a sharp woman in her fifties who had handled the Pendelton estate for decades. "Walter, I just got a copy of Kyle's plea deal. He's flipping — giving up the name of his accomplice in exchange for a lighter sentence."

Walter gripped the phone. "Who?"

"His brother, Richard," Margaret said, her voice tense. "The one who runs that investment firm in Chicago. Kyle says Richard was the mastermind — he wanted to get his hands on your bank's merger accounts through Kyle's position in the family."

Walter closed his eyes, feeling a deep, weary disappointment. He'd known Richard as a boy, watched him grow up, even helped him start his first business. To hear that the man he'd mentored was behind this was a bitter pill.

"And there's more," Margaret continued. "The police found a hidden ledger in Kyle's apartment. It shows he was planning to sell Mateo's shares to a shell company in the Cayman Islands. If you hadn't acted when you did, the shares would be gone."

Walter's jaw tightened. "I want that ledger. And I want Richard arrested before he gets wind of Kyle's deal."

But Richard was already moving. That night, a sleek black car pulled up to the manor gates. Richard stepped out, his face a mask of charm, his expensive suit impeccable. He smiled at the security camera, as if he had every right to be there.

Walter met him at the door, Mateo at his side. "Richard," Walter said, his voice flat. "I wasn't expecting you."

"I came as soon as I heard about Kyle," Richard said, his tone dripping with sympathy. "I can't believe what he did. I'm here to offer my support — and to make sure the family stays strong."

Walter studied him for a long moment, then stepped aside. "Come in. We have a lot to discuss."

In the library, Richard took the seat Kyle had once occupied, his eyes scanning the room, landing on the vault. "I'm glad you're keeping the assets secure. I can help with that, if you need."

Walter poured two glasses of whiskey, his back to Richard. "You know, I've been thinking about the merger you proposed last year. I turned it down then, but maybe I was too hasty."

Richard's eyes lit up with barely concealed greed. "It's not too late, Walter. I can make you a very generous offer. More than fair."

Walter turned, handing Richard a glass. "I'm sure you can. But first, tell me something. Why did you send Kyle to steal from my grandson?"

Richard's smile faltered. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Kyle confessed," Walter said calmly, pulling out a second recorder. "He named you as the mastermind. I have it all on tape."

Richard's face went pale, but he recovered quickly, forcing a laugh. "Kyle is a liar. He's desperate, and he'll say anything to save himself."

Walter set down his glass. "Then you won't mind if I share this with the police. They're already on their way."

Richard stood, his composure cracking. "You can't prove anything. That recording is hearsay."

"It's not hearsay," Walter said, stepping closer. "It's a confession. And I have something else — a document that proves you've been siphoning funds from my bank for years. I found it in the vault, behind the stocks. I've been saving it for a moment like this."

Richard's face twisted with rage. "You old fool. You think you're so clever."

"I'm not a fool," Walter said, his voice low. "I'm a man who's been waiting for you to show your hand. And now you have."

Suddenly, the library door burst open, and two police officers entered, followed by Margaret. Richard's eyes darted toward the window, but it was too late. He was surrounded.

As the officers handcuffed him, Richard spat at Walter's feet. "This isn't over. You haven't seen the last of me."

Walter smiled, a cold, triumphant smile. "Oh, I think it is. Enjoy your stay, Richard. I'll be sure to visit you in prison."

Mateo clung to Walter's side, watching as Richard was dragged away. "Grandpa, is it really over?"

Walter looked down at the boy, his eyes softening. "Not yet, son. There's still one more secret in that vault. And it's going to change our family forever."

He walked to the vault and pressed a hidden latch on the side. A small compartment slid open, revealing a faded envelope. Inside was a letter, written in his late daughter's handwriting, and a photograph of a woman he'd never seen before.

Mateo peered at it. "Who is that?"

Walter's hands trembled as he read the letter. "She's your mother, Mateo. The one who gave you up for adoption. And she's alive."

The boy's eyes went wide with shock. "My mother? But— I thought she died."

"So did I," Walter whispered, tears streaming down his face. "So did I."
