He Pretended to Be Blind for Years—His Greedy Nephew Never Saw the Trap Coming — Part 2 of 3

The Letter That Changed Everything
Two hours later, the conservatory was quiet except for the patter of rain against the glass. Edward had dismissed the staff, poured himself a whiskey, and sat across from Maya, who was still clutching her locket. The police had taken Damon to the county jail, but Edward knew this was only the beginning.
"There's something I haven't told you," Edward said, setting down his glass. "About your mother."
Maya's eyes widened. "My mother? She died when I was a baby."
"That's what everyone believed," Edward said. He pulled a yellowed envelope from his jacket—the same one his attorney had delivered earlier that day. "But this letter, written by your mother's own hand, tells a different story."
He unfolded the paper, his hands trembling. "She didn't die in a car accident, Maya. She was murdered—poisoned, slowly, over six months. And the man who did it was my brother, your uncle—Damon's father."
Maya's breath caught. "Why?"
"Because she discovered the truth about the Kingsley fortune," Edward said, his voice thick with grief. "She found out that Damon's father had been embezzling from the estate for years. She threatened to expose him."
The rain hammered harder against the glass. Maya's hands were shaking. "So that's why you pretended to be blind? To catch him?"
Edward shook his head. "No, child. I pretended to be blind to protect you. I knew Damon would come for the fortune—and I needed to see who he would hurt along the way."
He paused, his eyes locking onto hers. "But there's more. The letter also reveals that your mother left something behind—a safety deposit box in Zurich, with evidence that would destroy the entire Kingsley family if it ever came to light."
Maya's voice was barely a whisper. "What kind of evidence?"
"Photographs, ledgers, bank records," Edward said. "Everything Damon's father did, and everything Damon was planning to do. I've spent years trying to find it, but the box is sealed in your name—the only person her will trusts."
Suddenly, the conservatory door burst open. A man in a trench coat stood there, rain dripping from his hat. Maya gasped—it was her mother's brother, Uncle Marcus, whom she hadn't seen in years.
"Edward," Marcus said, his voice tight, "we have a problem. Damon posted bail. And he's not alone—he's got your former business partner with him, the one who disappeared ten years ago."
Edward rose from his chair, his jaw set. "Then it's time we paid a visit to Zurich."
Maya stood too, her small frame suddenly looking stronger. "I'm coming with you."
Edward looked at her, his eyes glistening. "You have your mother's courage."
"And her stubbornness," Marcus added with a sad smile.
As they headed for the door, Edward's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen—a message from an unknown number: "The box has been opened. You're too late."
He froze, his face paling. Maya grabbed his arm. "Grandfather? What is it?"
"We're not going to Zurich," Edward said, his voice low. "Someone else knows about the box. And they've already beaten us to it."
