Her Jealous Sister Dumped Me Off A Rooftop — But The Billionaire I Was Fighting For Had Other Plans — Part 2 of 3

The Unraveling Truth

The immediate aftermath of the fight was a blur of flashing lights and hushed, urgent voices. Paramedics, summoned by horrified guests, tended to Matthew, their movements efficient and professional against the backdrop of the continuing downpour. He had a nasty gash on his forehead and likely a concussion, but he refused to be taken to the hospital, insisting he was fine. His eyes, however, kept darting towards Samantha, who had been apprehended by security, her initial fury replaced by a chilling, almost triumphant calm. I watched her, a knot of dread tightening in my stomach. This wasn't the end; it was a terrifying pause.

Later, in the sterile quiet of a private room away from the stunned partygoers, the confrontation I knew was inevitable finally began. Matthew sat beside me, his face pale but his gaze intense. “Clara,” he began, his voice low and gravelly, “we need to talk about Samantha.” The way he said her name sent a fresh wave of unease through me. It wasn’t the tone of a man whose fiancée had just tried to murder his lover. It was something more… measured. Controlled.

“Talk about what, Matthew?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. “She tried to kill me. She’s clearly unstable.” I gestured vaguely towards the door, where Samantha was being held, her security detail a stark reminder of the night’s brutality. I expected him to reassure me, to express outrage, to pledge his unwavering support. Instead, he sighed, a weary sound that seemed to carry the weight of the world.

Matthew's Game

“Clara, Samantha has… issues,” he conceded, choosing his words carefully. “But you have to understand, her actions stem from a deep-seated insecurity. She feels threatened. We’ve been friends for years, you know.” He paused, searching my face. “And our families… they have a history. A very complicated history.” This was news to me. My family and Matthew’s were worlds apart. Or so I had thought.

“What history?” I pressed, leaning forward. “What are you not telling me, Matthew?” The rain had stopped, but the air in the room felt heavy, suffocating. I sensed a shift, a subtle redirection of the narrative that felt deeply unsettling. His hand covered mine, his touch meant to be comforting, but it felt strangely cold. “It’s… difficult,” he murmured. “Let’s just say Samantha’s family has always felt entitled to… certain things. Things that have historically belonged to my family.”

My mind raced, trying to piece together the fragments he was offering. Entitled? Belonged? It sounded like something out of a twisted fairy tale. “What things, Matthew?” I asked again, my voice sharper now. “Are you talking about money? About business?” His thumb stroked the back of my hand, a practiced gesture of reassurance that now felt manipulative. “It’s more than that, Clara. It’s about legacy. About power.”

He looked away, his gaze fixed on the rain-streaked window. “Samantha’s family… they believe they were wronged by mine generations ago. They believe something precious was taken from them. And Samantha… she sees you, and everything you represent, as a symbol of that injustice. She sees you as the obstacle to reclaiming what she believes is rightfully hers.”

I pulled my hand away, a cold dread washing over me. This wasn't just a rivalry over a man. This was something far older, far more dangerous. “So this fight… this whole charade… it wasn’t just about you?” I asked, the realization dawning with sickening clarity. “It was about her family’s perceived grievances? Her vendetta?” Matthew finally met my gaze, and the look in his eyes was not one of love or concern, but of calculation. “You’re a smart woman, Clara. You’re starting to see.”

He stood up, moving towards the window. “Samantha is… passionate. But she’s also misguided. Her family has fed her these stories for years. She believes she’s fighting for justice.” He turned back to me, a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing on his lips. “But sometimes, the biggest obstacles are the ones we create ourselves. And sometimes,” he added, his voice dropping to a near whisper, “the path to what we truly desire requires… decisive action.”

The implication hung heavy in the air. He wasn't just a victim of Samantha's rage; he was somehow orchestrating this, manipulating both of us. The fight on the terrace, my near-death experience – it all felt like a performance, a carefully staged event designed to serve his own hidden agenda. My resolve hardened. I wouldn’t be a pawn in his game. I had survived the fall, but now I had to survive the man I thought I loved.
