The Housekeeper's Secret: A Mansion Confrontation That Changed Everything — Part 2 of 3

The Secret That Fell From the Bag

My father walked over to the duffel bag and knelt down, his broad shoulders blocking my view for a moment. He reached inside and pulled out a thin, worn envelope that had been tucked into the lining. I hadn't seen it when Emily emptied the bag; it must have been hidden in a secret pocket. He held it up, and the room seemed to suck in a collective breath.

"What is that?" Sarah demanded, her voice sharp with a new kind of alarm.

My father didn't answer her. He opened the envelope and pulled out a photograph, old and faded. I saw him stare at it, his face going pale. He looked up at Emily, and his eyes seemed to soften—a look I hadn't seen in years.

"Emily," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Who gave you this?"

Emily's eyes welled with tears, and she looked down at her hands. "My mother," she said. "Before she passed away. She told me to keep it safe, that it was important. She said it would explain everything one day."

Sarah stepped forward, trying to snatch the photo from my father's hands. "James, what are you doing? This is nonsense. The girl is a thief, and you're letting her distract us."

But my father held the photo out of her reach, his gaze fixed on Emily. "The woman in this picture," he said slowly. "She looks just like you."

I moved closer, curiosity overriding my caution. I saw the photo in his hands: a younger version of my father, standing next to a woman with a warm smile, her blonde hair loose around her shoulders. She looked familiar, and then it hit me—she looked like Emily, only older.

"That's my mother," Emily said, tears spilling down her cheeks. "She said this man was my father. She said he didn't know about me, but if anything ever happened to her, I should find him."

My father's hand trembled. "What was your mother's name?"

"Margaret," Emily whispered. "Margaret Sullivan."

The name hung in the air like a ghost. I saw my father's expression crumble—I had never seen him look so vulnerable. "I knew Margaret," he said, his voice breaking. "She was... she was someone I loved, a long time ago."

Sarah's face contorted with rage. "This is absurd! James, you're not falling for this little act, are she? She's playing you."

But my father shook his head. "Margaret never told me she was pregnant. She left before I could find out. I looked for her for years, but she disappeared."

Emily looked up, her eyes wide. "So you're... you're my father?"

The room erupted into murmurs. I could see the guests exchanging shocked looks, and I felt the ground shift beneath my feet. This wasn't just a stolen bracelet; this was a revelation that could tear our family apart.

Sarah stepped between my father and Emily, her voice shrill. "This is ridiculous. You're letting this little liar spin stories in front of our guests. I demand you call the police right now."

But my father stood up, his gaze cold. "No," he said firmly. "We're going to get to the bottom of this, but not here. Not in front of everyone."

He turned to the guests, his voice returning to that authoritative tone. "I apologize for the interruption. Please, enjoy the evening. We'll handle this privately."

The guests began to drift away, but I could feel their eyes lingering on us, hungry for more drama. Sarah stood fuming, her hands clenched at her sides. I caught Emily's eye, and she looked lost, terrified, and I felt a pang of something I couldn't name.

My father turned to me. "Clara, take Emily to the study. We need to talk."

I nodded, and as I led Emily away, I heard Sarah hiss, "This isn't over, James."

But my father didn't answer. He just watched us go, his face a mask of emotion that I couldn't read.
