Scene from the story “I Saw My Best Friend's Text on My Fiancé's Phone During Our Engagement Party”

Golden Lights and a Screen Full of Shadows

The garden was alive with the gentle murmur of laughter and the soft glow of Edison bulbs strung between the weeping willows. It was a mild October evening in Savannah, the kind of night people write love songs about. Julian and I had spent six years building a life together, through graduate school, tiny apartments, and late-night study sessions. Tonight was our engagement celebration, surrounded by the fifty people who mattered to us most in the world.

My phone had died around twilight after taking dozens of photos with relatives. When my college roommates gathered by the rose arbor and waved for me to join them, I reached instinctively for Julian's phone, which was resting beside a bowl of punch on the rustic high-top table. Julian had wandered toward the porch to grab fresh ice with his brother, smiling back at me over his shoulder just moments before.

I swiped the screen awake, intending only to open the camera app. But before my thumb could tap the lens icon, a banner notification slid down from the top of the glass. The contact name made my pulse skip: Chloe. Beneath her name was a single, devastating sentence that felt like ice water in my veins.

"Did you tell her yet? We're running out of time."

The garden music seemed to fade into a dull, muffled hum. I stood paralyzed, reading the words again and again as if the letters might rearrange themselves into something innocent. Without realizing it, I spoke the question aloud into the evening air.

"Did you tell her yet?"

The Sound of Spilled Champagne

A soft gasp sounded directly behind my shoulder. I spun around on my heels, the fabric of my linen dress brushing against the table edge. Chloe was standing less than two paces away, holding two glasses of sparkling wine with ribbons tied around their stems. She had been on her way to toast with me.

Her face was completely devoid of color. The radiant smile she had worn all evening vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated panic. Her hands shook so noticeably that the pale liquid inside the glasses sloshed over the rims, splashing onto the manicured grass.

"Clara..." she whispered, her voice cracking beneath the weight of the word. "What are you doing?"

Across the lawn, Julian turned from the cooler. He must have caught the strange stillness between us, the sudden rupture in the festive rhythm. His gaze locked onto his phone clutched in my right hand, then darted to Chloe's terrified posture. In an instant, his easy, boyish grin dissolved into sheer terror.

He abandoned the cooler and strode across the grass, his footsteps quick and heavy. The warm breeze carried the sound of someone laughing near the fire pit, completely oblivious to the small, silent explosion occurring beside the hydrangeas.

"Clara, sweetheart, let's put the phone down," Julian said, his voice dropping into a desperate, hushed register as he approached. He reached out an open palm, his fingers trembling ever so slightly. "Whatever you're thinking, please, just give me the phone."

I pulled the device against my chest, staring between the man who had promised to love me forever and the woman who had held my hair back in college dorm bathrooms. The betrayal hung between us, heavy, thick, and suffocating.
