Scene from the story “My Boss's Wife Vanished in an Explosion — Years Later I Found His Baby Crying at Midnight”

Midnight in the Varric Nursery

My name is Sofia Marino, and for two years I have been invisible. I came to the Varric estate in Chicago with no references, no family, and — as the housekeeper liked to note on my file — no voice worth mentioning. That last part was literal. An explosion took my voice at twenty-three, and the world took everything else soon after.

So I learned to live small. I scrubbed pots in the biggest kitchen on the North Side, kept my eyes down, and asked for nothing from anyone.

But every night at midnight, I heard him cry.

Baby Marco, the four-month-old son of Enzo Varric himself, wailed for hours in that carved walnut bassinet, under warm amber sconces that never seemed to soothe him. The staff whispered about it. The high-priced night nurse, Lydia, billed ten thousand a month, and the baby cried louder than ever.

Most nights I stood in the service stairwell with a warm linen towel pressed to my chest, my heart breaking with every scream. Because I knew something no one in that house knew.

I knew why that baby wanted me.

The Night Lydia Raised Her Hand

That midnight, Marco's cries rattled the walls, and Lydia finally snapped. I heard her voice cut through the nursery like a blade.

"Shut up, you little brat! Do you think I get paid ten thousand a month to listen to you scream all night?!"

She raised her hand toward his blanket. My body moved before my mind did. I lunged through the doorway, towel still in hand, ready to throw myself between a mafia princess and a nurse with a temper.

But a shadow got there first.

Enzo Varric crossed the nursery in two strides, caught Lydia's wrist in mid-air before her fingers could touch the blanket, and pushed her firmly back toward the hall door. His voice was low, lethal, and absolutely calm.

"Raise a hand near my son's crib again and you'll never see daylight — get out of my estate right now."

Lydia fled, pale as milk, her designer coat flapping behind her. And then Enzo turned to me, and his voice broke into something I had never heard from a patriarch. Exhaustion.

"Hold him for a second while I get the bottle, Sofia — he hasn't slept in three days."

I took that baby into my arms, and the crying stopped. Instantly. Like a radio switching off. Marco nuzzled into my neck, and tears I couldn't explain burned my eyes.

Then his tiny fingers tugged at my sleeve, and the cuff button popped.

The fabric slid down my forearm. And Enzo Varric went completely, deathly still.

He was staring at the black-ink phoenix crest on my inner wrist — the crest of his family — with a date inked beneath it. The date of his secret wedding. The wedding no one was ever supposed to know had happened.

He set the glass bottle down with a sharp clink and gripped my forearm gently, his whisper shaking.

"Only my bride Elena bore the Varric phoenix mark on her wrist before the cartel ambush… Sofia, look at me — is it really you?!"

Tears spilled over my lashes. I nodded, and the words I had rehearsed alone in a linen closet for three years finally found my ruined voice.

"Your uncle told me you married someone else after I lost my voice in the explosion, Enzo. I hid in your kitchens just to watch over our son."

Enzo pulled us both against his chest. His vow vibrated through his ribs into mine: "There was never anyone else, my queen — my uncle will pay tonight, and you are taking your throne back!"

Neither of us knew that Uncle Salvatore was already inside the house. And neither of us knew what Lydia would sell him before sunrise.
