I Left Him at the Altar Ten Years Ago, Now He Is My Dying Son's Doctor — Part 2 of 3

By WixForum KitchenPublished

A Reckoning Long Past Due

The hallway seemed to shrink into a suffocating tunnel. Julian lowered the tablet, stepping close enough that Emma could catch the faint, familiar scent of cedarwood soap beneath the clinical hospital odors—a scent that dragged a dozen dormant memories straight to the surface. His eyes were fierce now, stripped of the detached composure expected of a chief surgeon.

"The dates don't add up for a child of someone else from that time, Emma," Julian said, his voice dropping to a low, intense rumble. "You ran from me ten years ago. You vanished off the face of the earth, cut every mutual friend off, and disappeared into thin air. Leo was born two years after our wedding date, yet his intake history shows a congenital anomaly that is almost exclusively hereditary on my family's side. My father had it. My uncle died of it."

Emma pressed Leo's jacket harder against her ribs, her breath hitching in her throat. The weight of her past was catching up to her at the worst possible moment, threatening to crush the only thing that mattered. She couldn't afford a bitter confrontation while her son lay dying on the other side of the glass.

"Julian, this isn't about us. It can't be about us right now," she pleaded, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. "He is just a little boy, and he doesn't know any of this."

"Answer me, Emma!" Julian's voice cracked with raw, suppressed anguish, drawing a quick glance from a passing nurse at the nurses' station. He lowered his tone immediately, regaining his professional boundary through sheer willpower, but the veins on his neck stood out taut. "You didn't just leave me at the altar, did you? You ran away because of something bigger. Who is his father?"

"A man named Marcus," Emma whispered, looking directly into his eyes, her gaze unflinching despite her trembling lips. "A man I met eighteen months after I left Savannah. A man who abandoned us the moment Leo was diagnosed with early childhood speech delays. Julian, Leo is not your biological son. But he is my entire world, and he has no one else. If you hate me, hate me. Punish me after he's safe. But don't let him pay for what I did to you."

The Scalpel and the Soul

Julian stared at her for a long, silent minute, the anger in his features slowly giving way to something far more agonizing: the realization that the woman he had loved had spent years struggling in solitude while he built an illustrious career. He closed the chart with a decisive snap, exhaling a slow, steady breath that reset his surgical calm.

"I took an oath, Emma," Julian stated firmly, his gray eyes steady and cold with resolve. "I don't punish children for the actions of their parents. I never have, and I never will. Leo is my patient, and I will treat him with everything I have learned in the last ten years."

Before Emma could express her gratitude, the red telemetry light above Trauma Bay Four began flashing rapidly, accompanied by a high-pitched, piercing alarm. The double doors burst open as a resident physician called out, "Dr. Vance! His oxygen saturation just plummeted below eighty! He's going into cardiac arrhythmia!"

Julian did not hesitate. Without another word to Emma, he sprinted into the bay, barking clear, authoritative orders to the response team. "Prep him for an emergency sternotomy. Page the bypass team and get OR Three open immediately! Push two milligrams of epinephrine and hold the compressions until I verify the rhythm!"

Emma was pushed back into the hallway by two assisting nurses as the doors swung shut. She stood alone in the empty corridor, watching the blur of scrubs through the narrow wire-reinforced glass, listening to the flatline tones that signaled her son's heart had stopped beating.
