A Little Girl Stopped My Wedding With a Shocking Secret About the Pool — Part 2 of 3

Ethan Opened the Box, and My Past Spilled Out
Ethan held the box like it was a bomb, his hands trembling. He pulled out the papers, scanning them quickly. I could see his face change—from confusion to shock to something darker. He looked up at me, his eyes filled with a pain I had never seen before. “This is a life insurance policy,” he said. “For Rachel. With you as the beneficiary.”
The crowd gasped. My mother covered her mouth. I felt the world spin around me. “Ethan, let me explain,” I begged, stepping toward him. But he held up a hand, stopping me. “Explain what? That your sister died five years ago, and you never told me she was missing? That you told me she was in a car accident, but this death certificate says she drowned?”
My heart stopped. He was reading the papers aloud, and every word hit me like a punch. “Cause of death: accidental drowning. Location: private residence pool. Date: June 12th, five years ago.” That was the date of the wedding I had been planning to host at my house. The pool I had just renovated. The pool that was now the centerpiece of my own wedding.
Lucy was crying, her small shoulders shaking. She ran to Ethan and buried her face in his leg. “I told you,” she sobbed. “I told you she was under the water.” Ethan knelt down and hugged her, his eyes meeting mine over her head. “Claire, what happened to Rachel?” he asked, his voice breaking. “And why is your niece telling everyone you’re not her mother?”
I couldn’t speak. The truth was too big, too ugly. I had been hiding it for so long that I had almost convinced myself it wasn’t real. But now, with the evidence in Ethan’s hands, there was no more lying. “Rachel was… my sister,” I whispered. “But she wasn’t a good person. She was abusive, to Lucy and to me. I took Lucy in when she was two, after Rachel disappeared.”
“Disappeared?” Ethan repeated. “The death certificate says she died. Which is it?” I looked down at my hands, my nails digging into my palms. “I found her in the pool that morning. She had been drinking. She fell in and hit her head. I tried to save her, but it was too late. I panicked. I didn’t call the police. I hid her body and reported her missing.”
“You—you hid her body?” Ethan’s voice rose, and the guests stepped back. “Where?” I pointed to the pool, my eyes wet. “There’s a false bottom under the deep end. I had it built when I renovated the house. I told everyone it was for maintenance.” A collective gasp went through the crowd. My mother fainted, and someone caught her.
“Why would you do that?” Ethan demanded. “Because Rachel threatened to take Lucy away from me,” I said, my voice cracking. “She was going to file for custody and expose that I had been lying to everyone about her death. I couldn’t let that happen. Lucy was my daughter in every way that mattered. I raised her, I loved her, I protected her.”
“But you didn’t protect her,” Ethan said. “You’re the one who traumatized her. You’re the one who made her believe her mother was in the pool.” I shook my head. “No, I never told her. She saw me hide the box that day. She was three years old, but she remembered. She’s been having nightmares for years, but I thought they were just dreams.”
Lucy looked up at me, her eyes empty. “You killed my mommy,” she said, her voice flat. I fell to my knees, reaching for her, but she flinched away. “No, Lucy, I didn’t. It was an accident. I promise.” But she didn’t believe me. And I knew that even if I said it a thousand times, she would never believe me again.
Ethan pulled out his phone. “I’m calling the police,” he said. I didn’t try to stop him. I had lost everything—my fiancé, my niece, my freedom. But as he dialed, Lucy tugged on his sleeve. “Wait,” she said. “There’s more.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small key. “This was under the pool too. It opens the safe in the basement.”
Ethan lowered his phone, confused. “What safe?” I felt a chill run down my spine. I had no idea there was a safe. Lucy’s eyes met mine, and for the first time, I saw something other than fear. I saw anger. “The one with all the money,” she said. “The money mommy took from grandma before she died.” My mouth went dry. I had never known about that.
The guests were in chaos now, some crying, some arguing. Ethan knelt down and took Lucy’s hands. “Honey, we need to go to the police. But first, can you show me where this safe is?” Lucy nodded, and they started walking toward the house. I tried to follow, but my legs wouldn’t move. I was frozen, watching my life collapse in front of me.
As they disappeared through the back door, I heard Lucy’s voice, small but clear: “And the money is just the beginning. There’s something else down there. Something that will prove she didn’t kill my mommy.” I squeezed my eyes shut, praying that was a lie. But I knew it wasn’t. Lucy had been holding onto this secret for five years, and now she was ready to reveal it all.
