Our Happy Home Shattered When Our Maid Sang a Lullaby My Husband Knew — Part 2 of 3

The Secret Behind the Lullaby and a Betrayal I Never Saw Coming

I couldn't sleep. My mind kept replaying Mark's reaction, the way he'd flinched at Lila's voice. He was hiding something, and I was determined to find out what.

The next morning, while Mark was at work, I searched his study. I found a locked drawer in his desk, and after some digging, I found a key hidden in an old book.

Inside the drawer were bank statements, years' worth of transfers to a woman named Rosa Delgado. And there was a birth certificate for a girl named Lila Delgado, born ten years before I met Mark.

My hands shook as I realized the truth. Lila was Mark's daughter. He'd been paying child support for over a decade, and he'd never told me.

I confronted him that night. I threw the papers on the kitchen table. "You have a daughter," I said, my voice cracking. "You hired her to work in our home."

Mark's face went dark. "You went through my things?"

"You lied to me," I said. "You've been hiding this for years."

"It was a mistake," he said, his jaw tight. "I was young. I didn't love her mother. It was over before we met."

"But Lila is innocent," I said. "She's your child, Mark. How could you hire her and not tell me?"

"I didn't know she'd be the one applying," he said. "She must have found out I lived here and applied on purpose."

My blood ran cold. "You think she's after your money?"

"I don't know," he said, "but I won't let her ruin what we have."

"What we have is built on lies," I said.

Mark slammed his fist on the table. "You have no idea what it's like," he yelled. "You're so perfect with your perfect family. I couldn't tell you because I knew you'd judge me."

"I wouldn't have judged you," I said. "I would have helped you."

But he wasn't listening. He was already packing a bag for me, telling me to leave. "You want to know the truth?" he said. "I'm tired of pretending. Get out."

I grabbed Sophie and went to my sister's house, my heart shattered. I kept thinking about Lila, the girl who just wanted to know her father. And Mark, the man I thought I knew, who turned out to be a stranger.

The next day, I went back to the house to get more clothes. I found Lila in the backyard, sitting on the swing, tears streaming down her face. She'd just discovered the truth too.

"He's my father," she said, her voice breaking. "I took this job to meet him. I never wanted his money. I just wanted him to know I existed."

I sat beside her. "He told you to leave?"

"He said I was a mistake," she said. "He said I was nothing to him."

I felt a rage I'd never known. Mark had thrown me out for uncovering his secret, and now he was discarding his own child. I knew I had to protect Lila, but I didn't know how.

That's when I remembered the lullaby. It was the same one my grandmother used to sing to me. And I realized something that would change everything.
