My Sister Destroyed My Marriage With One Lie, But Her Confession Was Only the Beginning — Part 2 of 3

By WixForum KitchenPublished

The Message That Turned My Grief Into Ice

I stared at my sister, my mind a hurricane of betrayal and confusion. "But Marcus—" I choked. "Marcus is his. You know that. You've watched him grow up."

"I know," she sobbed. "But James was already so angry about the photos, I thought one more lie would push him to come home and talk to you. I thought if he confronted you, you'd explain everything, and he'd see the truth. I never thought he'd just leave."

"You're a fool," I spat, my voice ice. "You're a jealous, foolish child who ruined my family for what? To watch me suffer?"

"No!" she cried. "I wanted to be you. I wanted your life. I wanted to know what it felt like to be loved like that."

The confession should have satisfied me, but instead, it lit a fire in my chest. "Where is James now?" I demanded. "I'm going to fix this. I'm going to tell him the truth, and he'll see you for the liar you are."

Amara shook her head violently. "You can't. He won't answer his phone. He's blocked me. He's blocked you."

"Then I'll go to his mother's house," I said, grabbing my keys. "I'll show him the baby photos, the DNA test from Marcus's birth. He'll have to believe me."

"Wait," Amara said, her voice suddenly sharp. "There's something I haven't told you."

I turned, my hand on the doorknob. "What now?"

She held up her phone, screen glowing in the dim light. "After James left, he sent me a message. He said... he knew I'd done it. He knew the photos were fake."

My blood ran cold. "What?"

"He said he knew all along," she whispered, tears still falling. "He said he was looking for an excuse to leave. He'd been waiting for one for years."

I walked back to her, snatching the phone from her hand. The message was still there, from James's number, timestamped three hours ago: "I knew you faked the photos, Amara. But I played along. I needed out. Don't tell Maya."

The floor seemed to tilt. "He used you," I breathed. "He used you to escape us."

"He used me," she echoed, her voice hollow. "And I let him. Because I was too blind to see he never loved you—he just wanted a way out."

I dropped the phone as if it burned. "No. No, that can't be true. He loved me. He loved Marcus."

"He loved the idea of you," Amara said, her voice cracking. "But he was already seeing someone else. That's what I found out. That's why I was jealous—not of you, sis. Of him. He had everything, and he didn't even want it."

I sank to the floor, my legs giving out. "Who?" I whispered. "Who is she?"

Amara's silence was an answer in itself. My eyes widened as I looked at her tear-streaked face, the way she couldn't meet my gaze. "No," I said. "No, not you."

"I'm so sorry," she whispered. "I didn't mean for it to happen. It was one night. After you introduced us at your anniversary party. I was so lonely, and he was so charming... and I was jealous of you. But it became more. He said he'd leave you for me. But he lied."

The room went black at the edges. My sister. My husband. The two people I trusted most in the world had been betraying me for months, maybe years. And the lie about the photos was just the tip of the iceberg.
