The Nanny They Blamed for Almost Drowning Baby Emma Fought Back With One Tablet — Part 2 of 3
By WixForum KitchenPublished

The Phone Call That Turned Everything Upside Down
Two days after the terrace, I was in my small apartment in Santa Monica when my phone rang. It was Lucas's attorney, and his voice was careful, measured, the way lawyers speak when they're about to deliver bad news.
Vanessa's family had retained Alderman & Finch—one of the most ruthless defense firms in Los Angeles. And their opening move wasn't defending Vanessa's innocence.
It was destroying mine.
Their claim: the security footage had been manipulated. Edited. By a ten-year-old boy with a tablet and, allegedly, a grudge against his stepmother.
Leo. They were going after a child.
"They'll argue Leo fabricated the clip," the attorney explained. "They'll argue Grace coached him. It's grotesque, but it's a strategy, and juries have fallen for worse."
My hands shook as I hung up. I had saved that baby's life, and now I was the villain in a story someone else had written.
Lucas called me an hour later. He sounded like a man who hadn't slept.
"Grace, I know what I saw. But I can't just believe my eyes anymore. I need proof that can't be questioned."
"Then get it," I told him. "Whatever it costs."
He did. He hired an independent digital forensics team out of San Diego—people who had testified in federal court, people no defense firm in California wanted to face.
What they found went far beyond one edited-or-not clip.
Weeks of Recordings Nobody Was Supposed to Hear
The patio camera's backup drive held weeks of unbuffered footage. Footage the household had never reviewed because nobody thought to look.
The forensic team assembled a report, and Lucas asked me to be there when he read it. I'll never forget the silence in that office.
Voice memos recovered from the patio mic. Vanessa, on call after call with a man the investigators identified as her ex-husband, a man Lucas had never been told existed.
Vanessa, discussing Lucas's estate plan with someone who sounded like a financial advisor.
And then one recording that made even the examiner set down his pen.
"Once the nanny's gone and the kids are out of the picture, everything is mine."
The kids. Out of the picture.
Lucas read that line four times. I watched a man's entire marriage die in real time, in a conference room, in front of strangers.
"She wasn't just trying to fire Grace," he said finally. "She was building a case. She needed me to distrust everyone in this house. She needed the kids isolated."
That night, the police asked to speak with Leo. Gently, with a child advocate present. And what my sweet, quiet Leo finally said made my stomach drop through the floor.
He had heard Vanessa on the phone before. Multiple times. Late at night, thinking the house was asleep.
He'd been hiding in the hallway, terrified, for weeks. Not telling anyone.
Because Vanessa had once found him listening and crouched down to his eye level with a smile and told him, very softly, that no judge in America would ever believe a child's word over hers.
"She said if I ever told, everyone would think I was broken," Leo whispered. "Like I was the problem."
I held that boy while he cried, and I realized something that chilled me: Vanessa hadn't just been after money. She had been methodically dismantling a family's trust, brick by brick, the same way she'd dismantled mine in under a minute on that terrace.
Lucas stood on the pool deck that night—same spot, same sunset light—holding Leo on one side and Emma on his hip. He looked at me with red-rimmed eyes and said the four words I'll carry for the rest of my life.
"Grace, you saved us all."
But the story wasn't done with us. Vanessa's preliminary hearing was set for Friday. And her family had just made one more phone call that changed the entire shape of the case.
The examiner's report was finished. The evidence was airtight. So why, three days before the hearing, did Vanessa's lead attorney suddenly request a private meeting with Lucas?
