The Nanny Cam Caught What the Dog Did — My Mother-in-Law Never Saw It Coming — Part 2 of 3
By WixForum KitchenPublished

The police arrived in under four minutes, but the drama was just beginning.
Two uniformed officers stepped into the nursery, their boots echoing on the hardwood. Sylvia stood frozen, her arms wrapped around herself, her face a mask of white terror. I handed the phone to the lead officer, who watched the footage with a grim expression.
“Ma’am, you’re going to need to come with us,” he said, his voice flat.
Sylvia’s composure cracked. “You don’t understand! I didn’t mean for her to get hurt! I just wanted the dog to get blamed! I wanted them to get rid of him!”
I stared at her. “What? Why?”
“He’s a menace!” she spat, her eyes wild. “He’s always watching me. He follows me around the house. He doesn’t trust me. And I knew if I made it look like he broke something near the baby, you’d finally see him for what he is!”
I felt a cold hand close around my heart. This wasn’t about the glass. This was about control. About a woman who resented a dog’s loyalty because it saw through her mask.
“You were going to hurt my daughter to get rid of my dog?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
Sylvia’s mouth opened and closed. No words came.
The officers stepped forward, but then my phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number. I glanced at the screen — it was Sylvia’s sister. The message read: “I saw the news. I know what she did. But there’s something you don’t know about her. Call me.”
My blood ran cold. I looked up at Sylvia, who was watching the officers with a strange, distant calm. She knew something. Something worse.
“Wait,” I said to the officers. They paused. I held up my phone. “I’m getting a call about her. Give me one minute.”
Sylvia’s eyes widened. “No! Don’t listen to her! She’s crazy!”
I answered the call. A woman’s voice, low and urgent, spilled out a story that made my knees buckle. Sylvia wasn’t just a bitter nanny. She was a woman with a past — a past that included a child she’d lost because of her own neglect. And now she’d fixated on my family, trying to replace what she’d lost by any means necessary.
“She’s been sending you letters,” the sister said. “Threatening ones. Did you ever get them?”
I hadn’t. But I had seen Sylvia going through the mail. My stomach lurched.
I turned to face Sylvia fully. The officers were watching, confused. Rex was standing at my side, his body tense, his eyes locked on her.
“You’ve been sending me letters,” I said, my voice low. “Threatening my family. Why?”
Sylvia’s face crumpled. She fell to her knees on the playmat, the glass shards crunching beneath her. “I’m sorry,” she sobbed. “I just wanted a family again. I wanted to be needed. And when I saw how much you loved that dog, I couldn’t stand it.”
I looked at my son, still clutching his baby sister on the sofa, his face pale. I looked at my dog, who had saved my daughter’s life. And I looked at the woman who had tried to destroy it all.
“Arrest her,” I said, my voice cold and final.
The officers moved forward, pulling Sylvia to her feet. She didn’t resist. She just hung her head, her sobs muffled by her hands, as they led her out of the nursery and down the hallway.
I knelt beside Rex, wrapping my arms around his neck. Owen joined us, his small body pressing against the dog’s side. The three of us stayed there, breathing together, as the front door clicked shut.
But as I stroked Rex’s head, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something else was coming. The sister’s words echoed in my mind: “There’s something you don’t know about her.” What else was there? What else could possibly be worse than what she’d already done?
My phone buzzed again. A text from the police. “We found a hidden camera in the nursery. It was hers. She was recording everything.”
I stared at the screen, my heart pounding. And then I understood: this wasn’t over. Not even close.
