The Nanny Told Police the Dog Attacked Her — Then His Collar Camera Rewound Everything — Part 2 of 3

The Arrest Didn't End It — She Had a Lawyer Who Believed Her Story
The police arrived within minutes. Two officers in crisp uniforms, a woman and a man, both calm and professional. I showed them the collar-cam footage without a word. The female officer watched it twice, her face hardening. Then she turned to Lorraine and read her her rights.
"You have the right to remain silent…"
Lorraine didn't resist. She hung her head as they cuffed her, her dark trench coat falling open to reveal the baby's pacifier still in her pocket. Ava watched from the doorway, her arms wrapped around Shadow's neck, her tears finally slowing to a trickle.
"Good boy, Shadow," I whispered, kneeling down. I hugged him hard, feeling his heart beating steady beneath my hands. "Good boy."
I thought it was over. I was wrong.
Three days later, I got a call from a detective. "Mr. Hartley, we have a complication."
The complication had a name: Marcus Webb, a slick defense attorney with a reputation for getting guilty people acquitted. He'd taken Lorraine's case pro bono, and he'd already filed a motion to suppress the collar-cam footage, arguing that it violated state wiretapping laws. I hadn't consented to being recorded, he claimed. Neither had Lorraine.
"But it's my dog," I said, my voice cracking with disbelief. "I put that camera on his collar. It's my property."
"It's a gray area," the detective admitted. "And Webb is pushing hard. He's also claiming the footage was altered. He's got a digital forensics expert ready to testify that it could have been deepfaked."
Deepfaked. The word hit me like a brick. I'd heard about that kind of technology, but I never thought it would be used against me.
"We need something more," the detective said. "Something physical. A witness. Anything."
I hung up and stared at my phone. The security system had captured the nursery from two angles — the ceiling cam and Shadow's collar. Both showed the same thing. But Webb was arguing that the ceiling cam could have been hacked, and the collar cam was a novelty item, not a professional surveillance device.
I felt like I was drowning.
That evening, I sat on the porch with Ava, watching the sun sink behind the houses across the street. Shadow lay at our feet, his head on his paws, his eyes half closed. He knew something was wrong.
"Daddy," Ava said quietly, "why are they trying to say Shadow is bad?"
"Because they're wrong," I said, pulling her close. "And we're going to prove it."
But I didn't know how.
The next morning, I got a call from my neighbor, Mrs. Delgado. She was an elderly woman with a sharp eye and a sharper memory. "Nathan," she said, "I saw something the other night. From my kitchen window. I was up late with my sciatica, and I saw that nanny of yours carrying something to her car."
I held my breath. "What was it?"
"A baby carrier," she said. "But it was empty. She put it in the trunk and then went back inside. I thought it was strange, but I didn't want to be nosy."
I thanked her, my mind racing. An empty baby carrier. She'd been preparing for the escape before she even entered the nursery.
But Webb would call that circumstantial. He'd say she was just being organized.
I needed the one thing I didn't have: a confession.
