She Mocked Me at the Airport, Then My Pilot Gave Her a Countdown She'll Never Forget — Part 2 of 3

The Man From My Past Appears on the Tarmac

I sat in the leather seat, the hum of the engines a low growl beneath my feet, but I couldn’t shake the image of Victoria’s face—twisted with rage, then suddenly, inexplicably, a flicker of triumph. She’d made a call, and I had the sinking feeling I was the punchline.

Captain Hale’s voice crackled through the intercom. 'Ms. Bennett, we have a situation. There’s a man approaching the aircraft. He says he needs to speak with you urgently.'

I frowned. 'Who is he?'

'He says his name is Daniel Reeves.'

The name hit me like a physical blow. Daniel Reeves—my ex-husband, the man who’d walked out on me three years ago, leaving me with a pile of debt and a shattered heart. I hadn’t seen him since the day he’d slammed the door, and now he was here, on my tarmac, in the middle of my victory.

I unbuckled my seatbelt and walked to the door, my legs unsteady. Captain Hale opened it, and I stepped out into the cold air, where Daniel stood, holding a manila envelope.

He looked older, tired, his once-handsome face etched with lines. 'Clara,' he said, his voice hoarse. 'I know you don’t want to see me, but this is important.'

'You have ten seconds before I call security,' I said, my voice steady despite the storm inside.

He held up the envelope. 'It’s about your father.'

I froze. My father had died when I was twenty-one, a quiet man who’d worked as an accountant and left me nothing but a small life insurance policy. 'My father is dead,' I said.

Daniel shook his head. 'That’s a lie. Or rather, it’s a half-truth. The man who raised you—he wasn’t your biological father. Your real father is—'

He paused, and Victoria’s voice rang out behind him. 'Our father, Clara. The great Julian Sterling.'

I turned, and there she was, standing beside a black sedan, her arms crossed, a smug smile on her face. 'Surprise,' she said. 'We’re sisters.'

The world tilted. Julian Sterling—the billionaire real estate mogul, the man whose name graced skyscrapers and charities, the man who was supposedly a recluse with no heirs. 'That’s impossible,' I whispered.

Victoria walked toward me, her heels clicking on the concrete. 'Oh, it’s very possible. Our father had an affair with your mother, back when she was his secretary. She left before you were born, and he never knew about you. But he found out—a few months ago. And he’s dying, Clara. He wants to meet you.'

I shook my head, trying to process. 'Why should I believe you?'

Daniel held out the envelope. 'Because I have proof. DNA results, birth certificates, a letter from your mother.'

I took the envelope, my hands trembling. I opened it, and the first thing I saw was a photograph—a young woman who looked exactly like me, holding a baby. My mother. And behind her, a man with dark hair and piercing eyes—Julian Sterling.

'My mother never told me,' I said, my voice barely a whisper.

'She was protecting you,' Daniel said. 'Or maybe she was ashamed. But now, Julian is dying, and he wants to make amends. He wants to give you your share of his fortune.'

Victoria laughed, a cold, brittle sound. 'Your share? You’re not his legitimate daughter. I am. He only acknowledged you because he’s feeling guilty. But I’ve already filed a claim to the entire estate.'

I looked at her, and the anger that had been simmering all day finally boiled over. 'You knew who I was when you mocked me in the lounge, didn’t you?'

She smirked. 'I wanted to see if you were worth the trouble. Turns out, you’re just a small-town girl with a lot of luck.'

Captain Hale stepped forward. 'Ms. Bennett, the countdown is at zero. Security is on its way.'

But I shook my head. 'No, Captain. Call them off. I need to handle this.'

I turned to Victoria, and for the first time, I saw a flicker of doubt in her eyes. 'You think you can take everything from me,' I said. 'But you’re wrong. I didn’t know I had a father, but now I do. And I’m not going to let you rewrite my life.'

Victoria’s smile faltered. 'What are you going to do?'

I looked at Daniel, at the envelope in my hands, at the jet behind me. 'I’m going to meet him,' I said. 'And I’m going to find out the truth.'

I turned and walked back to the plane, my heart racing. The countdown was over, but a new one had begun.
