The Secret That Could Destroy Me
Captain Sterling didn't move. His hand remained steady on my back, but I could feel the tension coiling through his muscles.
"What's he talking about?" he asked, his voice low.
I couldn't meet his eyes. Liam's fever had spiked again, and his little body was shaking against mine.
"It's a long story," I said, "and we don't have time."
But Julian wasn't done.
"She performed a surgery on a twelve-year-old girl three months ago," he called out, his voice dripping with venom. "The girl died on the table. And the hospital quietly suspended her license while they investigated."
The crowd gasped. I felt the weight of every stare pressing down on me.
Captain Sterling turned to face Julian, his expression unreadable.
"Is this true?" he asked.
Julian laughed, a cold, brittle sound. "Check the records. She's a liability, Captain. You're putting that baby in the hands of a killer."
"That's enough," I said, my voice cracking with fury. "Liam is my son. And I did nothing wrong."
But the damage was done. I could see the doubt flicker in Captain Sterling's eyes.
"I need to know," he said, his voice softer now. "If there's an investigation, there are protocols."
"The investigation was closed," I said, my throat tight. "I was cleared. But the hospital wanted to avoid a lawsuit, so they quietly transferred me to a smaller clinic. They didn't want the publicity."
"She's lying," Julian spat. "I have a contact in the medical board. They're still reviewing her file."
Captain Sterling's jaw tightened. He looked at Liam, then at me, and I could see the war raging behind his eyes.
"I don't have time for this," I said, my voice breaking. "My son is dying. I need to get him to London. Please."
"You'll get your flight," Captain Sterling said, "but not in my cockpit. I need to verify your story first."
I felt the floor drop out from under me.
"You can't be serious," I whispered. "He's burning up. Every minute matters."
Captain Sterling looked away, and in that moment, I hated him.
"I have a daughter who survived because of you," he said, his voice rough. "But I also have a responsibility to my passengers. I can't take you if there's any doubt."
Julian smirked from where the marshals held him. "Looks like the great Captain Sterling has a conscience after all."
"Shut up," Captain Sterling snapped. He turned to me, his eyes pleading. "Give me an hour. I'll make some calls."
"Liam doesn't have an hour," I said, tears streaming down my face. "He has maybe forty minutes before his respiratory system shuts down."
Captain Sterling's face went pale.
"What?"
"He's been on oxygen for two days," I said, my voice breaking. "The portable tank is almost empty. If I don't get him to a proper ICU, he'll die."
Captain Sterling stared at me, and I saw the realization hit him like a physical blow.
"You performed that surgery on my daughter," he said slowly. "You saved her life. And you're telling me you made a mistake on another child?"
"I didn't make a mistake," I said, my voice hard. "The girl had a rare condition that was misdiagnosed by three other specialists. I did everything I could. But her parents wanted someone to blame, and the hospital wanted to protect their reputation."
"Then why were you suspended?"
"Because I refused to sign a non-disclosure agreement," I said. "I wanted to speak publicly about the misdiagnosis. The hospital didn't like that."
Captain Sterling studied me for a long moment, and I could see the gears turning in his mind.
"I believe you," he said finally. "But I need proof."
"Call my former chief of surgery," I said. "Dr. Marcus Webb. He'll tell you the truth."
Captain Sterling pulled out his phone and dialed. The gala crowd watched in stunned silence as he walked a few paces away, speaking in low, urgent tones.
I held Liam close, whispering to him that everything would be okay, even as I felt his little body growing weaker.
After what felt like an eternity, Captain Sterling returned. His face was grim.
"Dr. Webb confirmed your story," he said. "He also said that the girl's parents are suing the hospital, and they're trying to drag your name through the mud."
"I know," I said. "That's why I left the country. I was trying to get Liam to a specialist in London before they could subpoena me."
Captain Sterling's eyes widened. "You're on the run?"
"I'm not running," I said. "I'm saving my son's life. The lawsuit can wait."
Captain Sterling looked at Liam, then at me, and something shifted in his expression.
"Get on the jet," he said. "I'll fly you myself."
Julian let out a strangled laugh. "You can't do that! She's a flight risk!"
"She's a mother," Captain Sterling said, "and I'm a father. I know which one matters more."
He swept me up in his arms and carried me toward the tarmac, his coat still wrapped around us.
But as we reached the door, a new voice rang out from the crowd.
"Wait!", a woman's voice called. "I have something to say."
I turned to see a familiar face pushing through the crowd.
It was the mother of the girl who died on my operating table.
