The Schedule That Exposed a Silent Betrayal in Our Break Room — Part 3 of 3
By WixForum KitchenPublished

The Truth Behind the Screen
I sat in my car, the engine off, the parking lot dark. Reggie's words echoed in my head: "Someone used your credentials." My password was secure, I was sure of it. But someone had gotten in.
Then it hit me. Last week, I'd left my phone on my desk while I went to the bathroom. Anyone could have grabbed it. And my phone had the app for the scheduling system.
I called Sylvia in HR, my voice calm now. "Sylvia, I need to know something. Does the system track when a user logs in from a mobile device?"
"Yes," she said. "It logs the device and the IP address."
"Can you check the log for the change to my schedule? What device was used?"
There was a pause. "It was a mobile device," she said. "An Android phone."
My heart pounded. "Whose phone?"
"I can't tell you that," she said. "But I can tell you this: the change was made from a phone registered to store equipment. A company-issued phone."
I thanked her and hung up. Company phones were only given to managers. Dana had one. Reggie had one. And the store manager, Mr. Holt, had one too.
I thought back to the break room, the way Dana looked at Reggie. The way Reggie kept his eyes down. They both knew something. But they were protecting someone.
I drove to the store, my mind made up. I was going to confront Mr. Holt.
He was in his office, typing on his computer. He looked up when I walked in, his face betraying a flicker of surprise. "Marcus. What can I do for you?"
"I know about the schedule," I said. "I know someone used my credentials to cut my hours."
He leaned back, his eyes steady. "That's a serious accusation."
"It's not an accusation," I said. "It's a fact. And I have the footage from the security camera showing someone entering the office last Tuesday at 4:47 PM."
"That doesn't prove anything," he said.
"It does if the person in the footage is you," I said.
He went still. "You're bluffing."
"Am I?" I pulled out my phone, showing him the video. The hooded figure paused at the door, swiping a keycard.
"That could be anyone," he said.
"The keycard belongs to Dana," I said. "But the person walking isn't her. She's not tall enough. You are."
He stared at me, his jaw tight. "You think you're clever."
"I'm not clever," I said. "I'm just desperate. I have a family to feed. And I'm not going to let you ruin me to cover up your own mistakes."
He stood, his chair scraping against the floor. "You don't know what you're talking about."
"Then explain it," I said. "Explain why my hours were cut. Explain why someone used my login. Explain why Dana and Reggie are both scared of you."
He was silent for a long moment. Then he let out a heavy sigh. "Sit down," he said. "There's something you need to understand."
I didn't sit. I stood, my hands clenched.
"The store is under financial pressure," he said. "Corporate is pushing me to cut costs. They gave me a quota of hours to eliminate. I had to choose someone."
"And you chose me," I said.
"I chose the person who wouldn't fight back," he said. "I was wrong."
"You were wrong," I repeated, my voice cold. "You tried to frame me for a mistake I didn't make. You used your power to hurt me."
"I know," he said. "And I'm sorry."
"Sorry isn't enough," I said. "I'm going to HR. I'm going to corporate. I'm going to the labor board if I have to. You're going to pay for this."
He looked at me, and for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes. "Marcus, please. I'll give you your hours back. I'll give you a raise. I'll do anything."
"It's too late for that," I said. "You broke my trust. And you broke the law."
I turned and walked out, my heart pounding. I went straight to Sylvia's office and filed a formal complaint. Within a week, an investigation was launched. Mr. Holt was suspended. Dana and Reggie were cleared of wrongdoing—they'd been trying to expose him all along.
But the biggest surprise came when I found out that Dana had been secretly recording every conversation she'd had with Mr. Holt about the schedule cuts. She'd been gathering evidence for months.
"I knew he was doing something shady," she told me, her voice tired. "I just didn't know how to stop him."
"You could have told me," I said.
"I was scared," she admitted. "But you gave me the courage to stand up."
In the end, I got my hours back. Mr. Holt was fired. And the team, once fractured, began to heal. I learned that sometimes, the people you least suspect are the ones hiding the biggest secrets. But I also learned that the truth, no matter how painful, always sets you free.
As I walked out of the store that day, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. I had stood up for myself. I had protected my family. And I had restored my own sense of worth. I looked back at the break room window, where the fluorescent lights still hummed, and I smiled.
Some battles are worth fighting. And I had won mine.
