The Silent Witness

The chandelier cast dancing shadows across the mahogany walls as I lay motionless under the satin duvet. My breath came slow and shallow, as I had practiced for weeks. I could smell Miranda's heavy perfume before I heard her footsteps.

“Hand over that estate deed!” Her voice was a harsh bark, filled with a greed that made my blood run cold. I kept my eyes closed, my face slack, playing the role of the comatose invalid. My son Leo's small hands trembled as he clutched the leather folder.

“Please leave this deed alone!” His voice cracked with tears, but he stood his ground between Miranda and my bed. I could picture his neat school blazer, his flushed cheeks, his wide eyes. He was so brave, and it took every ounce of my willpower not to sit up and protect him.

Miranda raised a hand, threatening to strike him. I saw the flash of her gold hoops in my mind's eye. My fingers itched to move, but I forced them to remain still, gripping the edge of the duvet.

Then I heard her lunge. My eyes snapped open. I threw off the covers and rose in one fluid motion, my burgundy silk dress flowing around me. She froze, her hand mid-air, but I was faster.

I caught her wrist in an iron grip. “Take your hands off her,” I said, my voice regal and commanding. Her pupils dilated in sheer terror. Leo gasped, tears still streaming down his face, but now they were tears of shock.

“You—you're awake?” Miranda stammered, her smirk long gone. I released her wrist and walked to the nightstand, picking up a remote and a folder.

“I faked this entire coma,” I announced, holding up the doctor's staged test report and the hidden camera remote. Her face went ashen as she realized what I had done.

The doors burst open, and uniformed police officers rushed in. They snapped steel handcuffs onto Miranda's wrists before she could even scream. I wrapped my arm around Leo's shoulders, pulling him close.

“You inherit nothing. Get out,” I said, my voice cold and final. Miranda hung her head as they led her away, her ruin complete. Leo buried his face in my side, sobbing with relief.

I held him tight, my heart pounding. This was far from over. The real battle was just beginning.
