She Pretended to Be Blind for Years — Then Caught Her Stepmother Red-Handed — Part 2 of 3

By WixForum KitchenPublished

The Hard Drive Under the Floorboard Changed Everything

Two weeks after Miranda's arrest, Vivienne sat in her study, the trust folder open before her. Leo was at school, safe, but her mind was far from at ease.

She had played blind for three years to expose the rot inside her own family. But Miranda was just a symptom. The disease ran deeper.

It started when a courier delivered a plain manila envelope addressed to her late husband's estate lawyer. Inside was a single key and a note in her husband's handwriting: "For when you're ready to see the truth."

Vivienne's heart clenched. She hadn't known her husband had left her anything else. He had died two years ago, suddenly, and the grief had nearly swallowed her whole.

But now, with the key in her palm, she felt a flicker of purpose. She unlocked the drawer in the old mahogany desk and pulled out a steel box she had never seen before.

Inside the box was a hard drive, dusty and unassuming. She connected it to her laptop, her fingers trembling slightly as the files loaded.

The first document was a full accounting of every offshore account Miranda had siphoned over the years. Hundreds of thousands of dollars, moved in careful increments.

But it was the second file that made her blood run cold. It was a video, timestamped the night her husband died. She clicked play, and her breath caught.

There was her husband, alive, sitting in this very study. And across from him sat Miranda, her face twisted in fury.

"You can't cut me out of the will!" Miranda screamed on the screen. "I've been loyal to this family for years!"

Her husband shook his head calmly. "Loyalty isn't measured in gifts, Miranda. It's measured in truth. And you've been lying to us all."

Vivienne watched as Miranda's eyes went dark. She stood up, leaned over the desk, and whispered something so low the microphone barely caught it. "Then maybe you need to learn what happens to men who don't appreciate what they have."

The video cut out. Vivienne felt a cold knot form in her stomach. She had always suspected Miranda had something to do with her husband's sudden heart attack. Now she had proof.

She called her lawyer, a sharp woman named Rachel who had known the family for decades. "Rachel, I need you to look into a chemical compound. Something that could cause a heart attack without leaving a trace."

Rachel was silent for a long moment. "Vivienne, you're not suggesting…"

"I'm suggesting that my husband was murdered," Vivienne said, her voice steady. "And I have evidence."

But when she tried to open the next file on the hard drive, it was encrypted. Password protected. She tried every date, every name, every combination she could think of.

Nothing worked. She felt frustration rise in her chest, hot and sharp. The truth was right there, locked behind a wall of numbers and letters.

She was about to give up when Leo walked into the study, his backpack still on his shoulders. "Grandma, what's wrong?"

Vivienne forced a smile. "Nothing, sweetheart. Just trying to open an old file."

Leo looked at the screen, his young eyes bright. "That's my birthday," he said, pointing at the password prompt. "11-07-2014."

Vivienne blinked. She typed in the numbers. The file opened.

Inside was a video of her husband, recorded just days before his death. His face was pale, but his eyes were fierce. "Vivienne, if you're watching this, then I was right to be afraid. Miranda is not who she seems. But you're stronger than you know. Use the glasses. Use the truth. And whatever you do, protect Leo."

Vivienne's eyes filled with tears. She had spent three years pretending to be blind, but she had never felt more sighted than at this moment.

She knew what she had to do next. And it involved a confrontation that would shake the Laurent family to its core.
