She Took Over the Company in One Meeting — Then Her Father's Secret Changed Everything — Part 2 of 3

By WixForum KitchenPublished

The Envelope That Changed Everything

The "usual place" was a small, dimly lit diner on the edge of the city, the kind of place her father used to take her when she was a child. The red vinyl booths and flickering neon sign felt like a relic of another era, a time when her world had been simple and safe.

Elena slid into the booth across from a man she'd never met. He was older, with gray hair and tired eyes, and he slid a manila envelope across the table without a word.

"Your father asked me to give this to you," he said, his voice gravelly. "He made me promise to wait until after you took over the company."

Elena's hands trembled as she opened the envelope. Inside was a single sheet of paper, yellowed with age, covered in her father's familiar, cramped handwriting. She read it once, then again, her blood turning to ice.

The will was dated three weeks before his death. In it, he'd left the company to her — but with a condition. A condition she'd never known about, hidden in a clause she'd never seen.

"If Elena chooses to take control of the company," the will read, "she must first prove that she is capable of running it without the support of Marcus Reed. If she fails to do so within ninety days, the company will be transferred to a trust controlled by..."

She stopped reading, her heart hammering against her ribs. The name that followed was the one she'd least expected.

"That's not possible," she whispered. "Marcus was her enemy. He was the one who—"

"Your father knew everything," the man said quietly. "He knew about the affair. He knew about the money Marcus embezzled. He knew about all of it. But he also knew that Marcus had a hold on you, a secret that could destroy you if it ever came out."

Elena's mind raced. The secret. The one she'd buried for years, the night she'd spent at a hotel with Marcus, the mistake she'd made when she was young and desperate and stupid. She'd thought no one knew. But her father had known. He'd known all along.

"He wanted to test you," the man continued. "He wanted to see if you could win without using Marcus's help. And you did. But now the trust is active. And Marcus is the one who controls it."

Elena's hands clenched into fists. The victory she'd savored just hours ago now felt like a trap. She'd pushed Marcus out of the company, but he still held the key to her future. And he knew it.

She looked up, her eyes blazing. "What else did my father say?"

"He said to tell you that the castle always has more than one gate," the man said. "And that the true ruler is the one who knows how to use them all."

Elena left the diner with the will in her purse, her mind spinning. She had ninety days to prove she could run the company without Marcus. But Marcus had ninety days to destroy her if she couldn't. And he had the ultimate weapon: the secret that could ruin her reputation, her family, and everything she'd built.

The next morning, Marcus was waiting for her in the lobby of the company building, a smug smile on his face. "Good morning, Elena," he said, holding up a copy of the will. "Looks like we have a lot to discuss."

She didn't flinch. "What do you want?"

"I want my job back," he said. "And I want you to admit, in front of the board, that you need me."

Elena laughed, a cold, brittle sound. "You'll never hear me say that."

"We'll see," he said, his eyes glinting. "You have ninety days. And I have all the time in the world."

As he walked away, Elena felt the walls closing in. She'd won the battle, but the war was just beginning. And she had no idea how to win.
