The Moment He Rose From That Wheelchair, Her Smile Vanished — He Had Heard Every Word — Part 3 of 3

The Final Secret

The next morning, Victor sat at his desk, the USB drive and the letter spread before him. Hannah was at school, safe, and the police had assured him Amber would be held without bail. But something nagged at him—the last piece of the puzzle he hadn't yet uncovered.

The USB drive contained a folder labeled "FINALE." Inside was a video file. Victor's hand hovered over the mouse, his heart pounding. He opened it.

On the screen, Amber appeared, younger, her hair shorter, a malicious smile playing on her lips. She was speaking to someone off-camera. "We're done here. The old man's wife is dead, and soon he'll follow. Say goodbye to the Montgomery fortune."

Victor's blood ran cold. He rewound the video, watching it again and again. Then he noticed something in the background—a reflection in a mirror. A man's face. A man he recognized.

It was his business partner, Richard. The man he'd trusted with his company for over two decades. The man who had been at his wife's funeral, offering condolences with a straight face.

"Richard," Victor whispered, his voice shaking. "It was you."

He grabbed his phone and called Richard's office. The line rang, and rang, and rang. Finally, a secretary answered. "Mr. Montgomery? Mr. Ashford is not in the office today. He said he was going on a last-minute trip to the cabin."

Victor's stomach dropped. The cabin. The same cabin where Amber had been caught.

He hung up and raced to his car, his mind racing. Richard had been playing both sides all along—planting Amber, orchestrating the accident, and now, with Amber in jail, he was the only one left to inherit if Victor disappeared.

When Victor arrived at the cabin, Richard was already there, calmly sitting on the porch, a glass of whiskey in his hand. "Victor," he said, a smile spreading across his face. "I was wondering when you'd figure it out."

"You killed my wife," Victor said, his fists clenched. "You sent Amber to destroy me."

Richard took a sip of his whiskey. "I didn't send her. She came to me. She wanted your fortune, and I wanted your company. It was a perfect partnership."

"You'll rot in prison for this," Victor spat.

"Maybe," Richard said, standing. "But you'll never prove it. That video is the only evidence, and I've already destroyed the original. The one you have is a copy—but without the original, it's worthless."

Victor smiled. "You're right. But I have something better."

He pulled out his phone and played a recording of their conversation. Richard's face went pale as he heard his own words. "You think I didn't learn from Amber's mistake?" Victor said. "I've been recording every conversation since the moment she was arrested."

Richard lunged, but Victor stepped aside, and the sound of sirens filled the air. The police had been waiting. Richard was handcuffed and dragged away, his face a mask of fury.

As the police cars disappeared, Victor sank onto the porch step, exhausted. He had lost his wife, his trust, and nearly everything he'd built. But he had saved his daughter, his legacy, and the truth.

Later that evening, Victor sat with Hannah in the study, the fire crackling in the hearth. She was curled up beside him, her head on his shoulder.

"Daddy," she said softly, "I'm glad you're not blind or deaf. I'm glad you could see and hear everything."

Victor smiled, brushing her hair. "So am I, sweetheart. So am I."

He looked at the photograph of his late wife, her smile bright and joyful. "I promised her I'd protect you," he whispered. "And I always keep my promises."

The fire crackled, the shadows danced, and in that moment, Victor knew that some secrets were meant to stay buried—but the truth, no matter how painful, always had the power to set you free.
