The Stairwell That Held Our Fury
The night had a way of swallowing secrets, and the stairwell of the old Hannam-dong apartment block was the perfect throat. Concrete walls, damp with the city's breath, muffled the distant wail of sirens into a lullaby for the lost. I stood there, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird, facing the one person I'd sworn to protect—and the one person who now looked at me like I was a stranger.
Min-jun, my older brother, had always been the shield. The one who took the hits, who carried the weight of our mother's tears and our father's absence. But tonight, his jaw was clenched so tight I could see the muscle twitch, and his eyes—those eyes that had once held nothing but warmth for me—burned with a cold, accusatory fire.
"아니요!" he spat, the Korean word slicing through the air like a blade. "Why are you doing this?" His voice cracked, not with weakness, but with the strain of a dam about to break. He stepped closer, and I felt the cold air of the stairwell press against my back.
His hand darted toward my pocket, and I flinched. "뭐 들어? 뭐 들어?" he demanded, his fingers brushing the envelope that had been burning a hole in my conscience for days. I could feel the paper, thin and damning, and I knew that if he saw it, everything would crumble.
"연맞고," I whispered, the word barely escaping my lips. It was a lie, a flimsy shield, and I knew it. But before I could think, a laugh escaped me—a hollow, bitter sound that echoed off the walls and masked the tremor in my hands. "하하하하."
Min-jun's face twisted, and he hissed a word that made my blood turn to ice: "러시피타." It was a word from our childhood, a secret phrase our father used when he was about to do something unforgivable. I hadn't heard it in years, and hearing it from my brother's mouth felt like a death sentence.
My eyes widened, but I forced a smirk, tilting my head the way I'd learned to do when I was cornered. "잘해," I drawled, the word dripping with false confidence. "Do it well."
The air between us thickened, heavy with unspoken violence. A secret hung between us like a blade, and I could feel its edge pressing against everything we'd ever been. The city's sirens grew louder, as if the world itself was closing in.
"You think I don't know?" Min-jun said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper. "You think I haven't seen the way you slip out at night, the way you flinch when the phone buzzes?" He took a step back, but his eyes never left mine. "You're in over your head, Ji-ho. And I'm not going to let you drag us both down."
I opened my mouth to speak, to tell him everything, but the words stuck in my throat like stones. How could I explain that the envelope in my pocket wasn't a betrayal—it was a lifeline? How could I tell him that the secret I was keeping was the only thing standing between him and a debt that could swallow us whole?
"You don't understand," I finally managed, my voice cracking. "You never do."
Min-jun laughed, a harsh, bitter sound that didn't reach his eyes. "Understand? I understand more than you think, little brother. I understand that you've been lying to me. I understand that you're in trouble—deep trouble—and you'd rather die than ask for help."
He took a step closer, and I felt the cold wall press against my back. "So let me make this simple: either you show me what's in that pocket, or I swear on our mother's grave, I'll never speak to you again."
The threat hung in the air, and I knew he meant every word. But the truth was worse than his anger—it was a truth that could break him, break us all. And I wasn't sure I was strong enough to survive it.
"Please, hyung," I whispered, using the honorific I hadn't used in years. "Just trust me—for once."
But his eyes held no trust. Only a fire that threatened to consume us both.
