Scene from the story “The Poolside Confession That Exposed the Truth About Marcus and Sean”

The Sun Was Hot, but Marcus Was Sweating for a Different Reason

The afternoon sun blazed over the backyard, turning the pool into a sheet of liquid gold. We were all sprawled out on loungers, drinks in hand, the kind of lazy Sunday that was supposed to feel like a postcard. But I knew better.

I had been watching Marcus all day. Every time Sean walked past, Marcus's eyes would dart away, his jaw tightening. It was subtle, but I grew up with him. I knew every tell he had.

So when I caught him staring at Sean one too many times, I decided it was time to have some fun. I pushed myself off my lounger, my bare feet slapping against the hot concrete, and made my way toward him.

He was sitting at the edge of the pool, his feet dangling in the water, pretending to be absorbed in his phone. But I saw the way his thumb was frozen over the screen, not scrolling, just hovering.

"Hey, Marcus," I said, my voice dripping with sweetness. "You look a little tense."

He jumped, nearly dropping his phone into the water. "Jasmine! You scared me."

I sat down next to him, close enough that our shoulders almost touched. "So," I began, tilting my head, "what's going on with you and Sean?"

His face went pale, then red. "What? Nothing. Why would you even—"

"Come on," I teased, "I've seen you two whispering all day. And you keep looking at her like she's a popsicle on a hot day."

He laughed, but it was hollow. "Don't don't don't don't don't I like you don't I like I don't know hey I've been knowing you forever I—"

I leaned in, my smirk widening. He was stammering so hard he was practically vibrating. The great Marcus, the one who never lost his cool, was falling apart in front of me.

"Ain't nothing going on with me and Sean," he finally blurted out, "but I would tell you, she was looking pretty good up there in that little bikini thing. But ain't nothing going on, man."

I burst out laughing. "So you admit she looked good?"

"That's not what I—" He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated. "You're twisting my words, Jasmine."

"I'm not twisting anything," I said, my voice dropping. "You're the one who can't stop talking about her. There's something there, and I want to know what it is."

He stared at me, his eyes wide, like a deer caught in headlights. The silence stretched between us, broken only by the distant sound of laughter from the other side of the pool.

"Fine," he muttered, looking down at the water. "But not here. Not now."

"Then when?" I pressed.

He opened his mouth, but before he could answer, Sean's voice cut through the air. "Jasmine! Marcus! Get in the water! It's perfect!"

Marcus flinched, and I saw it again — that flicker of something in his eyes. Fear, maybe. Or guilt.

I stood up, brushing off my hands. "We're not done," I said, not taking my eyes off him.

"I know," he whispered, and the weight in his voice made my stomach drop.

I walked back to my lounger, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I had just pulled on a thread that was about to unravel everything. Marcus was hiding something, and it wasn't just about a girl in a bikini.

It was bigger than that. And I was determined to find out what.
