The Accusation That Froze the Room
Vanessa's voice sliced through the study like a shard of broken glass.
"Get this vicious mutt out!" she shrieked, her manicured finger trembling as she pointed at Scout.
Marcus froze in the doorway, his hand still on the doorframe, his mouth a thin line. He had heard the commotion from the nursery, but this—this was something else.
Scout stood between Vanessa and the bassinet, his body a living shield, his red harness catching the light. He didn't bark, didn't growl. He just held his ground, his eyes locked on Vanessa.
Ethan, his small frame trembling, wrapped his arms around Scout's neck. Tears carved tracks down his flushed cheeks.
"Daddy, she poisoned the milk!" he blurted out, his voice cracking.
Marcus didn't move. He didn't speak. He just watched his wife, the woman he'd married after Emily's death, and saw something he'd never seen before—fear. Real, gut-wrenching fear.
Vanessa's jaw clenched, her eyes darting to the baby bottle lying on the rug, the amber liquid still pooled around its nipple.
"He's lying, Marcus," she said, her voice suddenly smooth, too smooth. "The dog attacked me. I was trying to protect the baby."
But Scout hadn't moved from his spot. He hadn't lunged. He had simply stood, a wall of loyalty and instinct.
Marcus stepped forward, his phone already in his hand. He didn't look at Vanessa. He looked at Scout—at the tiny camera clipped to the dog's collar, a gift from a security consultant friend who thought it would be a good idea to keep an eye on the nursery when Marcus was away on business.
"Look at his wireless feed," Marcus said, his voice calm, commanding.
Vanessa's face went pale. She took a step back, her manicured hand clawing at the air as if she could grab the words and shove them back into his mouth.
"No—Marcus, don't—"
But he was already tapping the screen.
The video was grainy at first, then sharpened into terrifying clarity. The 4K feed showed Vanessa, just hours earlier, standing over the baby's crib. She was holding a small amber dropper bottle—the same one she'd tried to hide behind her back moments ago.
Marcus's breath caught. He watched as she squeezed three dark drops into the milk bottle, then swirled it, a satisfied smile curling her lips.
"You poisoned his milk bottle," Marcus said, turning the screen toward her.
Vanessa's lower lip quivered. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came.
Ethan sniffled, still holding Scout. "She—she did it, Daddy. She wanted to hurt the baby."
Marcus knelt down, pulling both Ethan and Scout into a fierce embrace. "Good boy, Scout," he whispered, his voice thick with gratitude. "Cuff her."
Two uniformed officers appeared in the doorway, their boots echoing on the hardwood floor. Vanessa's eyes went wide, her mask of composure crumbling as they approached.
"This is a mistake!" she cried, but her voice was hollow, desperate.
The officers grabbed her arms, and she hung her head, the silk of her emerald blouse catching the light one last time as they led her out.
But as the door clicked shut, Vanessa looked back—and in her eyes, Marcus saw something that chilled him to the bone.
This wasn't over.
