The Final Stand

Marcus didn't wait for the police. He grabbed Scout's leash and ran for his car, his heart pounding against his ribs.

The text was still on his screen, those words burning into his mind: Now I'll take everything.

He drove like a madman, screeching into the driveway of his estate. The front door was ajar.

Scout bounded ahead, his nails skittering on the marble floor. Marcus followed, his breath ragged.

In the nursery, the bassinet was empty.

Lily was gone.

"No—no, no, no—" Marcus's voice cracked.

Scout sniffed the air, then bolted down the hallway toward the study. Marcus ran after him, his legs barely holding him up.

Through the open double doors, he saw her—a woman in a hooded jacket, cradling Lily in her arms, her back to him.

"Turn around," Marcus said, his voice low and deadly.

The woman turned. It was Vanessa's sister, Dana.

"You," Marcus breathed.

Dana smiled, a cold, empty smile. "You never even saw me, did you? I was always just the quiet one, the one who cleaned up Vanessa's messes."

"Put the baby down," Marcus said, stepping forward.

Dana clutched Lily tighter. "Vanessa was supposed to do it quietly. Make it look like SIDS. But she was too weak. She fell for the dog, for the boy. So I had to finish the job."

Scout growled, a low rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. He stepped in front of Marcus, his body rigid.

"Call off the mutt," Dana hissed, "or I'll drop her."

Marcus didn't move. Instead, he pulled out his phone and tapped the screen.

"I already called the police," he said. "They're on their way."

Dana laughed. "By the time they get here, it'll be too late."

She moved toward the open window, the wind catching her hood.

Scout lunged.

It happened in a blur—Scout's jaws clamping onto Dana's sleeve, pulling her back, making her stumble. Lily let out a startled cry, but Marcus was already there, catching his daughter in his arms.

Dana screamed, thrashing, but Scout held on, his teeth locked on her jacket.

Then the sound of sirens filled the air.

Marcus cradled Lily against his chest, her tiny hand curling around his finger. He looked at Scout, who was now standing guard, his tail wagging slightly despite the chaos.

"Good boy," Marcus whispered, his voice breaking. "Good boy."

Later that night, after the police had taken Dana away, Marcus sat in the nursery, Lily asleep in his arms. Ethan was curled up on the floor beside Scout, his hand resting on the dog's back.

"Scout saved us twice," Ethan murmured, his eyes half-closed.

Marcus smiled, stroking Scout's head. "He did. He's our hero."

Scout let out a soft whine, resting his chin on Marcus's knee, as if to say, I'll always protect them.

And in that quiet moment, with his family safe and his dog by his side, Marcus finally felt the weight lift from his shoulders. The nightmare was over.

But as he looked at Scout, he knew one thing for certain: some guardians are sent to us in fur and loyalty, and they never ask for anything in return.

Except maybe a belly rub.
