The Accusation That Shook the Nursery
The rain tapped a nervous rhythm against the loft's tall windows, each droplet streaking down the glass like a tear that refused to fall. Inside, the nursery smelled of lavender and fresh linen, but the air itself felt charged, electric, as if the room knew something terrible was about to happen.
Arthur had barely stepped through the doorway when he heard it—Katrina's voice, shrill and trembling, pointing a finger at Bella's snow-white chest.
"Your dog knocked Zoe down!" she cried, her eyes wide with fake horror.
But Arthur didn't move. He didn't speak. His jaw tightened, and his gaze swept the room in a single, cold sweep. Zoe was on the floor, her pink overalls dusty, but she was clutching Bella's neck with both arms, her small body shaking with sobs.
Bella stood between the child and the open basement door, her massive golden frame a living barrier. Her front paws rested on the crib rail, blocking any path to the baby inside. Her eyes were fixed on Katrina, unblinking, unafraid.
"Daddy, she pushed my back!" Zoe wailed, her voice cracking through the silence.
Arthur's heart split in two. He looked from his daughter's tear-streaked face to his wife's crimson dress, and something in his chest went cold. He had seen the way Katrina backed away from the crib, the way her gold heels clicked against the hardwood in retreat.
"Play the nursery monitor clip," he said, his voice low and steady as he tapped the tablet in his hand.
Katrina gasped. Her hand flew to her throat, and the color drained from her face like water from a cracked vase.
The screen flickered to life, and the four of them watched—Arthur, Zoe, Bella, and the terrified woman in red—as the footage rolled. Katrina opening the basement door. Katrina's hand shoving Zoe's shoulder. The stumble. The dark stairs. And then Bella, lunging across the doorway, her body a shield.
"You shoved Zoe toward the stairs," Arthur said, turning the screen toward her.
Katrina's lip quivered. She opened her mouth, but no words came out. The footage was undeniable. The truth hung in the air like smoke.
But then, something shifted in Katrina's eyes. A flicker of something darker than fear. Something that looked almost like triumph.
"You think that's the worst of it?" she whispered, a smile crawling across her face like a spider. "Check the collar cam, Arthur."
Arthur's blood turned to ice. He hadn't reviewed the collar cam feed yet. He had been so focused on the nursery monitor that he had forgotten Bella's collar carried its own lens.
He pulled up the live feed. The screen showed the nursery from Bella's perspective—the crib, the window, Katrina's approach. But then Bella turned her head, and the angle shifted. The camera caught a shadow at the basement door. A figure. A face.
Arthur's own face.
His hand trembled. The tablet nearly slipped from his fingers.
"You didn't think I knew about your little insurance policy?" Katrina said, her voice dripping with venom. "Your wife's death wasn't an accident, Arthur. And this dog saw everything."
Arthur stared at the frozen frame. The date. The time. His wife's last day. And there he was, standing at the top of the basement stairs, watching her fall.
Bella whined softly, pressing her head against Arthur's leg. She knew. She always knew.
Zoe looked up at him, her eyes wide and innocent. "Daddy?"
Arthur didn't answer. He couldn't. The truth was a knife, and it was buried deep in his chest.
The rain kept falling, and the nursery monitor kept playing, and Arthur realized that the nightmare was only beginning.
