The Day I Caught My Fiancée Stealing From My Sick Daughter — She Never Saw Me Stand — Part 3 of 3

The Truth That Set Them Free
The next morning, Raymond sat in his penthouse, nursing a cup of black coffee, his eyes fixed on the rain-streaked windows. Ruby was still asleep, exhausted from the ordeal. The text message burned in his mind: “I want my share.” He had ignored it, hoping it was a bluff. But then another message came, this time with a photo attached—a picture of Ruby as a toddler with a man Raymond recognized all too well: Marcus, the former driver.
Raymond's jaw tightened. He had paid Marcus a hundred thousand dollars to disappear, to sign away any claim to Ruby. But now the man was back, and he was desperate. Raymond knew that desperation could make a man do terrible things.
He called his private investigator, a man named Frank who had helped him many times over the years.
“I need you to track down Marcus Webb,” Raymond said. “He's back, and he's threatening to expose the truth about Ruby.”
Frank promised to get on it, and Raymond hung up, pacing the floor. He couldn't let Marcus anywhere near Ruby. He had already lost his first wife to cancer, and he had almost lost his fortune to Chloe-Mae. He couldn't lose his daughter.
But as the hours passed, Raymond realized that hiding the truth would only make things worse. If Marcus went public, the media would have a field day, and Ruby would be caught in the crossfire. He needed to take control of the narrative.
He made a decision. He would confront Marcus face to face, offer him a settlement, and make it clear that any attempt to contact Ruby would be met with legal consequences. He had Frank set up a meeting at a neutral location—a quiet café downtown.
When Raymond walked into the café, he saw Marcus sitting in a corner booth, looking older and more haggard than he remembered. The man had a five-o'clock shadow, bloodshot eyes, and a nervous twitch in his hands.
“Mr. Vance,” Marcus said, his voice shaky. “I didn't think you'd actually come.”
Raymond slid into the booth across from him, his expression unreadable.
“You threatened my family,” Raymond said. “That's not something I take lightly.”
Marcus's eyes darted around the room. “I'm sorry. I'm in a bad place. I lost my job, my wife left me. I just need some money to get back on my feet. I thought—I thought you'd want to keep this quiet.”
Raymond studied him for a long moment. He could see the desperation in Marcus's eyes, the fear. He had been a good man once, before life had beaten him down.
“I'll give you a check for fifty thousand dollars,” Raymond said. “In exchange, you sign a new agreement: no contact with Ruby, no claims to paternity, and you leave the city for good.”
Marcus's eyes widened. “Fifty thousand? That's not enough. I need more. I have debts—”
Raymond leaned forward, his voice dropping to a whisper. “You're in no position to negotiate. I have evidence of your past attempts to extort money from my wife. If you push me, I'll make sure you spend the next ten years in prison. So take the check, and disappear.”
Marcus swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he accepted the check. He signed the agreement, and Raymond pocketed it.
“If you ever contact my daughter again,” Raymond said, standing up, “I'll make your life a living hell.”
Marcus nodded, and Raymond walked out of the café, his heart pounding. He had averted the crisis, but he felt no victory. He just felt tired.
When he returned home, Ruby was awake, sitting on the floor in her pajamas, playing with her teddy bear. She looked up at him with a smile that melted his heart.
“Daddy, where did you go?” she asked.
Raymond sat down beside her, pulling her onto his lap.
“I had to take care of something,” he said. “But I'm here now, and I'm not going anywhere.”
Ruby hugged him tightly. “I love you, Daddy.”
Raymond closed his eyes, feeling the warmth of her small body against his chest. He knew that the road ahead wouldn't be easy. There would be rumors, questions, maybe even legal battles. But he also knew that he would face them all, as long as he had Ruby by his side.
He thought about the day he had first held her, a tiny bundle in his arms, and how she had looked up at him with those trusting eyes. He had made a promise to her then, and he would keep it forever.
“I love you too, sweetheart,” he whispered.
And in that moment, Raymond knew that the greatest wealth he had ever possessed was not the steel empire he had built, but the love of a child who called him Daddy.
As he looked out the window at the city lights, he felt a sense of peace settle over him. Chloe-Mae was in jail, Marcus was gone, and Ruby was safe. He had won, not by hiding from the truth, but by facing it head-on.
He smiled and hugged Ruby a little tighter, grateful for the second chance life had given him.
