The Stroke Was Fake, But My Fiancé's Greed Was Real — Until the Cops Came — Part 3 of 3

The Final Confrontation That Broke the Greedy Fraud

The next morning, Diana walked into the county jail with the confidence of a woman who had nothing to lose. She wore a simple black dress, her pearl necklace glinting in the harsh fluorescent light, and she carried a manila envelope under her arm.

Kyle was brought into the visiting room, his silk shirt rumpled, his eyes bloodshot. He looked like a man who had spent the night staring at the ceiling, replaying every mistake he had ever made. But when he saw Diana, his face twisted into a sneer.

“Come to gloat?” he said, his voice hoarse.

“No,” Diana said, sitting down across from him. “I came to ask you one question.”

“What?”

“Why?”

Kyle laughed — a broken, bitter sound. “Why? You really want to know? You had everything, Diana. The money, the company, the house, the son. And you treated me like a pet. Like a boy toy you could dress up and show off at parties. You never took me seriously.”

“So you decided to steal from me?” Diana said, her voice calm.

“I decided to take what I deserved,” Kyle spat. “You were going to die someday, and I was going to get everything anyway. I just decided to speed up the process.”

Diana’s eyes narrowed. “And Mateo? You were going to hurt him?”

Kyle’s sneer faltered. “I wasn’t going to hurt him. I just needed him out of the way.”

“Out of the way,” Diana repeated, her voice dropping to a whisper. “He’s a child. He’s my son. And you were going to send him away so you could play king of the castle.”

Kyle opened his mouth to respond, but Diana cut him off. She reached into the envelope and pulled out a stack of papers, sliding them across the table.

“Do you know what these are?” she asked.

Kyle glanced at them, his face paling. “They’re… they’re the forged documents. I thought they were destroyed.”

“They were,” Diana said. “But I had copies. And I also had a little chat with your old business partner, Marcus. The one you swindled out of his inheritance. He was very eager to testify against you — for a price.”

Kyle’s hands began to shake. “Diana, please…”

“Please what?” Diana said, standing up. “Please forgive you? Please forget that you tried to steal everything from me and my son? Please pretend that you’re not the same man who threatened a seven-year-old just to get what you wanted?”

She leaned forward, her face inches from his. “You’re going to prison, Kyle. Not for the theft — the lawyers will argue that was a misunderstanding. But for the forgery, the fraud, and the attempted kidnapping of my son.”

“Attempted kidnapping?” Kyle’s voice cracked. “I never…”

“Your lawyer did,” Diana said, a cold smile playing on her lips. “He was very cooperative after I showed him the bank records. He told me everything about your plan to take Mateo to Mexico. That’s a federal crime, Kyle. With a minimum sentence of twenty years.”

Kyle’s face went white. His hands dropped to his lap, and for the first time, Diana saw genuine fear in his eyes.

“Please,” he whispered. “I’ll do anything.”

“I know,” Diana said, turning away. “That’s the point.”

She walked out of the visiting room without looking back. The guards escorted Kyle to his cell, and Diana stepped into the sunlight, where Mateo was waiting in the back of her car, his face pressed against the window.

“Mommy?” he asked as she slid into the driver’s seat. “Is he gone for good?”

Diana reached over and ruffled his hair. “He’s gone, sweetheart. And he’s never coming back.”

Mateo’s face broke into a wide smile, and Diana felt something loosen in her chest — a knot she hadn’t realized she’d been carrying for years. She started the engine, and as they drove away from the jail, she knew that this was the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

The lesson she would carry with her, and teach her son: never trust anyone who smiles with their mouth but not their eyes. And always, always keep a hidden camera.
